Patricia Barber's "Cafe Blue" - pressing errors

While ripping CD's with Exact Audio Copy to transfer to my music server I discovered something interesting. My copy of Patricia Barber's "Cafe Blue" ( Blue Note Records - non HDCD version) would not rip. EAC would try and try, slow down to 0.1x speed and would finally give up trying to fix all the errors.

I took a look at the CD with Plextor's PlexTools Professional XL. At least my pressing is an absolute mess! - it is full of C1 and C2 errors. Worse, it has many CU (uncorrectable) errors -a cacophony of color! A duplicating house would never accept this CD for replication. A properly recorded/pressed CD does not have any C2 errors, much less CU errors.

The Beta/Jitter tests results are similarly dreadful.

The CD looks perfect: no scratches or any visible flaws.

I borrowed a friend's copy. His pressing is much better: more or less normal C1 errors with nothing untoward going on. However suddenly during the last ten minutes there are many thousands of C2 errors, although no CU errors.

Both copies play in my CDP (Sony SCD-XA777ES). On quick comparison they sound the same. The error correction of this player is very good. Perhaps this has saved me from audio horror. I haven't had the chance to try my copy in other players yet.

I have always suspected that the lower frequencies of the upright bass have been EQ's out on the recording of "Ode to Billy Joe", but this is a different issue.

This is a favorite test CD among audiophiles. Yet, at least the two copies I have are very poorly pressed. Has anyone else seen, heard or otherwise had problems with this CD?

Your post has me curious. What settings are you using in EAC? I'd like to try ripping my CD with the same settings. I only have the original Premonition pressing, but, it might still be interesting to see if it suffers from similar errors.

Re: Patricia Barber's "Cafe Blue" - pressing errors

Going from memory I have EAC configured as follows:

I leave disabled the option that EAC will skip track extraction on a read or sync error. I similarly leave disabled the option that EAC skip extraction after X amount of time. Error recovery high (five bars on the recovery "meter"). (The error meter kept filing up with little red squares while ripping.)

Now that I think about it, these settings imply that EAC would keep trying forever. Yet it finally gave up.

I have never had EAC give up on any CD before.

But for having PlexTools to check the CD I would have no idea what was going on.

I think when she signed with Blue Note, they re-released it and attached their name.

Additional data point: my Premonition pressing of Barber's "Modern Cool" is also full of C2 errors. From 15 minutes in to about 18 minutes there are thousands of erros - an absolute mess. These two CD are the worst commercial pressings I have seen.

A very kind offer, Struts!

I'm set as I could copy them well enough with EAC so that there are no audible problems so I am content.

I still find it odd that there are so many problems with these pressings however.

Elk, I assume you've come across Accurate Rip on your travels. It can save a lot of time while still offering audiophile peace-of-mind.

Great idea! I've seen it but haven't used it. This is an excellent test case. I'll try it.

Thanks
