Not intending to hijack your thread, but as a side note, Larry Carltons', (one of my favorite guitarists of all time) most recent release returning to his rock roots is awfull!

I'd wait for any possible retraction before I started slamming the NYT. But, you're right in one sense. Their editor has fallen down on the job. They even printed the stuff about Iraq having WMD's and ties to Bin Laden. How do you believe anyone who would lie ... sorry, be "mistaken" about that slam dunk?
Hi Roy,
I'm guessing I'm just a tad younger than you (I'm 51) so I can be forgiven for missing this album when it was released (1966 - I was all of 11 years old) but man what a line up: (info from All Music Guide)
Out of Sight & Sound - The Free Spirits
(4-1/2 star review plus AMG Album pick)
Released 1966 on the ABC Label
Credits
Columbus Baker - Guitar, Vocals
Larry Coryell - Guitar, Sitar
Chris Hill - Bass, Vocals
Bob Moses - Drums
Jim Pepper - Tenor sax
Bob Thiele - Producer
Rudy Van Gelder - Engineer
This the info for the first album, AMG has two albums listed. Which one is being reissued? If it helps, AMG states that this album as released on CD in 2006 on the Sunbeam label.
Jazzfan: That's the album all right. You're correct about my age. When this came out you might have been 11 but I was 18 and I bought the album and even saw them live (I believe at the old Anderson Theater on 2nd Avenue in NYC opening for some rock headliner that I've forgotten).
But now that we're talking about Larry Coryell, The Times compounds the error by placing Larry CARLTON in the early Gary Burton Quartet with Bob Moses and Steve Swallow. I might knock Coryell for the Free Spirits but I saw him with the Burton Quartet a lot at the Cafe Au Go Go (typical bill: Burton Quartet, Youngbloods, Blues Project) and he's a very good jazz player. And I always admired the Gary Burton Quartet for playing jazz in rock venues (including the Fillmore East) and not pandering to the crowd.
I suspect the actual error was a typo, they meant to credit the band's creative force to Clinton and it was misspelled as Carlton. Clearly, according to the New York Times, one or the other of the Clinton's deserves credit for any creative contribution. You're a strong man, Roy E, reading that stuff on a daily basis. My hat is off to you.
With the NY Times track record the past few years maybe they thought it was Rhoda Morgenstern's door man, Carlton The Door Man? He had an interesting voice for the apartment "intercom", but maybe not for singing.
