Thanks for posting your suggestions, Jim. And yes, I really enjoyed JM's column -maybe the best thing he's written in Stereophile as far as I'm concerned.

I have only done recordings of some of my more talented church friends; very informal, just sitting around in a living room singing old gospel songs. Two mics straight into a cassette or DAT - talk about minimalist technique! Oh, I guess I have recorded some congregational singing too. Still, all very informal, BUT I do always think I'd like to get into it more.

You should do more as I find it great fun. I am about to build a very cheap version of Ray Kimber's Iso-Mic and I hope I am not infringing on any patents as a jail stay this late in life would be no fun. LOL

I tried using the Tony Faulkner mic array of spaced omnis at about 27" apart and really liked what I heard. This is similar to what he did recording K622. As John Marks mentioned space mics have been a just about every distance possible.

I wish I had started decades ago and not years. I have really enjoyed John Marks writing. I also look forward to more.

I, too, very much like John's articles. I just wish they were at least twice as long.

Jim, did you ever build a version of Ray Kimber's Iso-Mic? If so, how did you do it?

At the moment I am generally using slightly spaced omni's (Sony KSM 44's), usually about 10' away and 10' high (small chamber groups) but am always experimenting.
