You might consider auditioning some monitor style speakers with soft dome, fabric tweeters. I'm admittedly heavily biased toward soft dome tweeters, mostly because my gear has limited capabilities that can drill holes in my walls with all but the sweetest metal tweeters. This is probably a bit thick headed of me, but when I see metal in a tweeter, I stare at it and just wait for the chance to declare, "There, see, I knew it, siblants!" I'm kidding, of course.

I like Dynaudio, so it's easy for me to encourage people to give them a listen.

Hi, Cybervision -- be sure to audition the B&W 805 Nautilus. I have heard them on 3 different occasions over the past couple of years, months apart, with classical and jazz, with tubes and solid state, and with low and high powered amps, and they have sounded just terrific each time. I am always impressed by speakers that keep sounding good over stretches of time, in totally different set-ups.

The B&W N805 would be a good one to audition..
The tweeter is acoustically "silent" compared most other speakers that have metal dome tweeters. Not sure how it compares to speakers with fabric domes though, but the times I've auditioned this speaker I've never noticed any excessive sibilance or tweeter localization cues at all.

Honestly, I regret not buying this speaker two years ago; The CDM 9NT's I purchased instead do not have the treble refinement and overall smoothness of the N805, and they actually cost more.
The irony is that I also purchased a very good subwoofer(Servo-15) with 9NT's, which would have very nicely mitigated any low-end limitations of the N805. I could have saved myself a few hundred bucks and had much better treble performance.

I recently auditioned two B&W bookshelf/satellite speakers recently in my quest for a pair of near field speakers to use in my living room. Both were under $2000 price tag.

The first was the new XT2

B&W XT2

Looked good, had nice drivers.

Unit 1: 1x 25mm (1 in) aluminium dome high-frequency
Unit 2: 1x 130mm (5 in) woven Kevlar

Since I have a pair of N805s I'll have to agree

However you might also take a look at some dynaudio S1.4. These are (in my oppinion) better than then N805 however with the disadvantage of being evil buggers to drive!

If you can afford the amp to go with the S1.4s you'll love them forever but in reality the N805's can be driven by anything. But as ever, you get what you pay for.
