Is showing IP numbers necessary on the forums?

I noticed it from the get go, but, kind of like it (being a moderator and admin at other forums.) I admit I pinged you the other night out of curiosity.

I'm behind a router or the software firewall didn't care. Seeing everyone's IP address is sort of weird. Makes feel like I need to take a shower. I wonder if we can pay to have our IPs unlisted. Like in a telephone book. For all I know one of us might be in a witness protection program or posting from prison or a mental institution. Don't say anything!

I have one Windows machine and one Linux machine. I'm seriously thinking about changing the Windows machine to a Linux box. Windows is like living in a bad neighborhood.

This just came out today from Microsoft.

VULNERABILITY ALERT:
Microsoft Windows IP source route validation vulnerability
RISK LEVEL: High

Threat Assessment High

On Tuesday, June 13, 2006 , the CA Security Advisory Team is issuing an alert regarding a high risk level vulnerability threat called Microsoft Windows IP source route validation vulnerability.

Microsoft Windows contains a vulnerability that can allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code. The vulnerability is due to the TCP/IP Protocol driver processing messages without properly validating length. Attackers can exploit the vulnerability by sending malformed packets to a vulnerable system.

Is it really necessary?

I've sent a message to our IT department, asking them about this. I'll let you know what I find out.

What is the outcome. Did the stereophile IT department acknowledge that showing IP numbers is very bad?
