Is a pre-amp a worthy upgrade?

What are the other components you are using? Player, amps (if any other than the NAD) speakers, cables etc. How big is your room and where do you have your speakers situated in relation to the room?

Sorry I wasn't more specific. Here's my equipment list: NAD T773 receiver, Van Alstine OmegaStar 440EX 2 channel amp (220x2), Behringer A500 amp (440x1) running bridged mono for my center, AAD 2001 monitors for mains on 24" sand filled target stands, Polk LSiFX surrounds, SVS 20-31PLUS sub, OPPO DVD/CD player as my source, Signal cables, Equitech balanced power unit, dedicated circuit for system, room is acoustically treated w/ bass traps, corner traps, & absorption panels at first reflection points. My room is 1/2 of my basement - 13x32x7, the room is cut in half w/ overstuffed sofa, surround speakers are 4 ft behind the sofa. The rest of the room is my computer area. The first 16 ft. is on a raised floor w/ carpet. The other half is tiled. AAD monitors are 3.5 ft from front wall & 2.5 ft from side walls, they are a good ft out in front of my TV. I hope this helps for your recommendations.
Thanks

The problem is that most audiophile preamps for HT and 2 ch are fairly expensive. There is a referb parasound model at Parasound 7.1 referb
Audio Advisor. It is over your budget, but would be an improvement and if you wife likes movies as well...maybe she can help with the added monies.

Once you get into Home Theater processors the good to great is not inexpensive.

Good Luck.

What i did not understand is whether you're trying to upgrade your HT rig or enchance your 2-channel reproduction.
If your are looking for better HT,i'd suggest a Denon av amplfier. If you are into better music system, since you allready have a Van Alstine power amp,why don't you get a Van Alstine pre-amp and use it together with the rest of your system. If i am not mistaken,Van A. pres have a pass-through switch. This way you can use the pre for music playing and your NAD for movies. The trick here is to have the necessary knowledge to re-wire the Nad's 2 channels to be used as surrounds instead of main channels.I am not familiar with that particulae NAD model but if it has pre out/ins , it can be done.
