He or she who is happiest is always better off. I would guess music lovers have fewer ulcers. Hardware philes probably consume lots of Tums and Tagamet.
I think most of us have a combination of all that in us. I love fooling around with gear and altering the sound. That is the hobbyist in me. I also love just listening for the pleasure of the music. That is the music lover in me. But, most of all, I love learning, which puts me in the "gear head" column at times.
Many people seem to have a personal frame of reference as to what is most important in enjoying audio and have a hard time relating to the other camp. This bias rears its head from time to time with debates on "musicality vs accuracy" or "gear vs music" or "analog vs digital" or "tubes vs solid state" and so on.
I say if you are enjoying yourself, you are doing it the right way...whatever way that is.
A low mid-hi system will sound good because it's not able to bring out the flaws either in the media or system's frontend, pre, amp, or speakers. (not to mention cables & wire) There is a price point on the way up to the 'audiophile' level where these flaws become noticeable and there is where the hunt for the holy grail begins.
Cheapskate - good post! Sorry but I haven't had that bike for a couple of years, but I don't have a picture of the newer bike.
You asked a good question when you turned it back on me, you #$%&@! If it was really about the ride, and a little cool factor, the Norton would be fine, but I find as I get older that a more comfortable ride is a great attraction.
I guess I didn't keep up with your credo. I have about 1300 LPs and another 300 CDs. I'm not sure of their value. I have single LPs that will fetch over $200 and a lot of LPs that I got free or close to free. My system retails over $60,000. Does that make me an audiophile as opposed to a music lover???
I would argue that most people are content with their system, and they definately don't surf the web for places like this or other audio related sites. When I was not a subscriber to Stereophile, I was much more content with my meager system.
The comment was also made that somehow a better system reveals the flaws in the music and the implication is that this makes the music sound worse.
This is absolutely not a problem. There might be certain recordings that will not sound as good when placed under the microscope but nearly everything will sound a LOT better.
Riiiight, it sounds better than most live venues i attend, at least 6 a month, usually more. Most live events have over done bass boom, vocals get washed out, my home system sounds better, with equal or better SLAM, IMPACT and any other word ya wanna throw around. With the right stuff, it's REAL, ALIVE, and better than LIVE. you don't have the good stuff yet....the delusion is the one who thinks one can't get LIVE reporduction done right, to be LIVE. Ya ain't gonna do it with 200W and a speaker with a 10" woofer, that's why it ain't real.
Any system that sounds better than live is by definition not accurate. That means it is not very good!!!
$60,000 for the entire system?!!! Come on, with midfi, mass fi stuff like that. Jeeeez, I have turntables more than that!!!! No wonder you have strange concepts on what LIVE is in the house. In another of your posts in another section, you said it's impossible to get LIVE reproduction at home, with the proper equipment it's easy. Look into some real equipment then you will realize, it's LIVE, it's REAL, it's possible at home.
Man, where's the gong when you need it?
DUP's repertoire is the the equivalent of an audio Abu Ghraib.
buddha, is dup still posting on this thread?
