MP; same initials as those awful compressed audio files.
Good to see a post from you again, Jazzfan. Of course there's no other singer like Billie Holiday - nor any quite like Ella either. Some others are fun, though. What do you think of Velma Middleton? I'll raise a birthday toast to Billie while I listen to her sing - thanks for a good excuse to have a drink.
What do I think of Velma Middleton? Since the only Velma I ever listen to is with her singing with the great Louie Armstrong I think she's GREAT! The bucket may have a hole in it but not my head!
As for my rather strong comments of a days ago...well I do get carried away. It's not that I don't enjoy Madeleine Peyroux, I really like her singing and her choice of material, but I just can't abide the constant Billie Holiday comparisions. They are a disservice to both of these fine singers.
The really odd thing is that by this point in her career Billie Holiday had probably recorded about 3 or 4 times as many songs as Ms. Peyroux has in her short career. Back then when they had a horse that could run, man did they run with it. Now it seems that they are afraid to wear the poor horse out.
Anyway, I had a great day last Friday listening to Lady Day all day on her birthday. I just hope that you managed to catch at least some of the broadcast.
