ear candles - the ultimate $4 tweak?

Hi everybody,

I'm new to this forum, but I have been reading Stereophile on and off for about 10 years and I think its great there is an online forum. Anyways, I recently tried ear candling on a friend's advice. As I just learned, ear candles are spiral tubes of wax that you place in your ear and have someone light the end. I'm not too sure exactly how it works, but a vacuum is created where earwax and "stuff" inside your ear is sucked out and gets trapped in the candle. Anyways, I just did this, and wow, I feel like I have new ears, much clearer and crisper. At $1.99 per candle, I think this is a great tweak! I would have never thought an improvement to your system would actually be to "clean" out your ears! Has anyone ever tried this? I'd be interested in hearing anyone else's experiences.

Right. There are better and safer ways to keep your ears clean. Amazing that these old nostrums survive.

Hey, don't pick on ear candles.

I went to the Phillipines and had totally new ears put in by one of those amazing guys who can do that stuff with their bare hands and he got me back to 20/20 (20Hz to 20,000Hz) for 400 bones plus the price of the trip.

Maybe ear candling could have saved me alot of green!

Seriously, though, here's some tricks you can do to test the experience.

Number one, have a friend or your doctor look in your ear before hand to see if there's anything in there to begin with. Your helper can look before and after.

Number two, and the best one...after one ear candling, go right to another place and don't tell them you just got candled. Then see what THEY get out!

Then do it at another place.

After several places, your head with either collapse from all the stuff they've taken out or it will dawn on you that the candle/funnel itself provides the detritus they show you.

Number three...if you HONEST AND TRULY want fresh ears, candling must be done in conjunction with a high colonic to really get your system in tune. It's especially helpful if your turntable seems to be demonstrating too much rumble.

Thanks for warnings guys, I won't be candling anytime soon...I had no idea of the dangers...here on Maui, there are certified ear candlers and the candles are sold in every health food store.

I wonder if the "improvements" I heard were simply pscyhosematic (sp?) or what. I am going to burn a candle by itself without sticking it in my ear to see what is left over inside the candle that apparently came out of my ears.

Buddha, I have had a colonic done, but never in conjunction with candling. At least with colonics, you can actually see what comes out in real time!!!
