I'm looking for a preamp with balanced (XLR) outputs. In the $0 - 1000 range ($0 would be great!!!!!), and it can be either solid-state or tube. Anyone know of any, it's hard to find companies that produce stuff like this, there should be a "search for component by options" website!

What are your other requirements? XLR inputs? Remote control? Phono stage? New/used?

My only real requirement is XLR outs. A set of XLR ins would be nice, no need for a phono stage, a remote would be handy but not essential (I need to lose a few pounds anyway ) and it could be used, but I prefer new gear in this price range, easier to find a dealer and set up a time to audition the piece. Thanks for the reply.

NHT makes a PVC (pasive volume control) that's a lot closer to the bottom end of your range than the top. I use one with my M-00 powered monitors for a desktop system and it's dead quiet and reliable.

I also bought a PVC, which I recommend highly for having balanced IO. Only pain is that the outputs are on TRS 1/4" jacks, requiring adaptors for both balanced and unbalanced use.

You can get a used Audio Research LS-2B for under $1000 in very good condition if you look around and are patient. I personally think that might be the best thing you could get for that price. For the details on that unit go to the ARCDB database website and check under line stages.
