I think home stores have more tweak materials than many realize.
In the past, I've used those "egg crate" mattresses (with the different contours for feet, middle, and head as wall treaments - they have very very low W.A.F. by the way.
After they came off the wall, I rolled them up longwise to make corner traps. They have dense cores with less dense outsides and fit nicely into problem corners.
I've also used styrofoam wine shipping boxes as wall/corner treatments with good results, and many shapes of styrofoam shipping thing-a-ma-bobs as diffusers for different applications. If ya paint 'em, they can look positively sculptural. Stll, low W.A.F.

Remember back in the day, Monster Cable made a sort of room divider thing that was meant to go between stereo speakers to enhance imaging?
Office Depot had a close out on some business "cubicle wall" thingies that were nearly identical. Putting mattress foam on them heightened their effect even further, but for my room/taste, they made for too dead a sound.
I love roaming to world with an eye for what may strike me as a hi-fi tweak in unexpected places!
Monty, I would love to hear about the results you get with these. You're thinking these would breakup -- or diffuse -- reflections? Let us know what you find.
I finally got around to doing a few room treatments, but found something that would work better and is even cheaper and no doubt more effective.
I was doing some shopping with my wife recently and ran across some 5x8 sheets of foam at Wal Mart (in the bedding and pillow section) that is about 2 inches thick and geometrically impregnated that will both absorb and diffuse room excitements.
This stuff is dirt cheap and cuts easily with scissors, is paintable, flexible and most importantly...works like a charm. Placed behind my wood blinds covering the window directly behind my listening position with a very light, synthetic throw draped from the valance made rather drastic improvements in controlling room reflections.
