An Elaborate Nest

To woo a mate, the male bowerbird builds an elaborate nest.

Thanks Stephen. You have once again caused me to further deplete my savings account and my existing Ikea Expedit shelf space with two more records I must absolutely, uncontrollably, reflexively, compulsively acquire and have.

I like it but... it's hard to explain. I think it sounds like a hundred records I've bought that have never lived up to their promise. Like on paper it would be my favourite album of the month but in reality I give it two listens and never get around to putting it on again. I always think I will play it again but there's always something else that, in the moment, I want to hear more. Or worse, that on the third listen that lazy affectation becomes irritating rather than endearing. I might end up being wrong and it would have been one of my top ten of the year but something tells me it wouldn't have so I'm not going to bother. It's a calculated risk that I've decided to take. Thanks for sharing though, Stephen. Keep 'em coming.

"What is happening to AUDIO products, this magazine is more like seeing how much bizarre the subscribers can take before they call it quits! John A. Are you AWAKE?"Sufficiently awake to wonder what connection there is between your comments, George, and anything Stephen Mejias has writen in this blog entry. Or with anything that has been published in the magazine, for that matter.

I have said it once I will say it again - GEORGE is funny. I read his comments and always chuckle.....then continue reading Mejias' fine blog entries. I LOVE the Bowerbirds and Joanne Newsom and would never have known about them had it not been for Mejias' blog. Nuff said.

Uh oh, George! RankStranger says you are no longer welcome! This IS a blog, George. So when the blogger writes about how amazing and different, in a good way, he is, or posts pictures of girls and says he's in love with them, you can't cancel!

Hey incurious GEORGE/Dup/Carl Engebretsen, There's some sad but classic irony in the fact that the only relevance you have on the internet is solely due to Stereophile. Outside of that one visit from JA, Carl Engebretsen may as well not exist. Yet here you are stalking this blog and prattling on for more attention from the people you call useless. Funny, no? Pathetic, yes.

"Yet here you are stalking this blog and prattling on for more attention from the people you call useless. Funny, no? Pathetic, yes." - michaelavorgna- Ouch! Stern but fair!

George = Banhammer

Oh incurious GEORGE/DUP/Carl Engebretsen, now you are being just plain silly. I don't work for Stereophile but don't let facts muddle your muddle now. Here's a question for ya: if I send an email to "ceng@optonline.net" does Carl read it and DUP respond? Does DUP ever disagree with GEORGE? Have you two locked poor Carl in the imaginary multiple-personality basement?

michaelavorgna's picture

Poor incurious GEORGE/DUP/Carl Engebretsen, the jig, as they say, is up. You're all the same guy and I'm the guy that's pointing that out. Now when people read the silly offensive things you write about them, they know that it's Carl Engebretsen at ceng@optonline.net doing the talking.

"Just look at this month's issue, what the heck is Fremer talking about, "Fleshy, more so than the other multi thousand dollar [turd]."What puzzles me about your continued swipes at the July issue's "Analog Corner," George, is that Mikey did perform some blind tests. I though you were a fan of blind tests?

michaelavorgna's picture

Excellent example incurious GEORGE/DUP/Carl Engebretsen! So if Commissioner Gordon sends BATMAN the Bat Signal and he gets an email response from "Bruce Wayne" [bwayne@optonline.com] signed "BATMAN" he would know BATMAN's true identity. Now see if you can follow me because this is the important part - when you send an email from GEORGE and the email is sent from "Carl Engebretsen" [ceng@optonline.net] but it's signed "GEORGE" we know GEORGE's true identity. Case solved! If I was the literal-reader-into type, I'd surmise that you fancy yourself an audiophile superhero (title case for the regular guy Carl, ALL CAPS for the alter-ego superheros DUP and GEORGE). UNDERDOG, maybe. And you say I'm weird.

GEORGE's picture

You are WEIRD, when did BATMAN ever send an e-mail? He uses the BAT PHONE! Cablevison doesn't provide service to Bat CAVES! Just Verizon will, phone line, pre FIOS. If I sent an e-mail and signed it Batman, am I? Batman? No, cus' I might be ROBIN messin' wit yas'! Or is it Alfred sending Batman e-mails, see how easy it is to be confused.

Guards. Seize him.

michaelavorgna's picture

Yes Doctor he actually believes other people believe he is all of these different people - GEORGE, DUP and Carl Engebretsen. At first we expected Dissociative identity disorder but then we noticed all of these alter egos behave in exactly the same way and they all exhibit the classic expressions of irritability, annoyance, impatience, aggression, and verbal abuse. And this has been going on for years. So now we've put him in with the other sociopaths and he's doing much better. The only ongoing issue is he seems obsessed and angered by the size of the lamp cord.

Its a pretty song that one - thanks for introducing me to this music. What the podcasters on all songs considered would call 'beard music'. Its great Stephen. In the garden of my in laws house there is a satin bower bird bower - I love watching the glossy blue black male preening, singing and dancing while a prospective mate stands in the bower. The bower, for most bower birds, has two stands of sticks beautifully formed in an parallel, reminiscent of two channel speakers. As an Australian birder, I think I should point out that the bower is not the nest. The bower is for seduction only (like two channel speakers). Copulation (can I use that word on this blog?) and the nest for raising chicks etc occurs elsewhere. But maybe I am being irrelevant ;-)

"Beard Music!!!" Ha! I love it! It's The perfect descriptor for this stuff. Thanks, David
