If John used a digital camera that had an automatic gain setting, where the impulses from the camera get scaled so that the largest value represents white, this might provide a plausible answer. If he used a flash and the surface of the cables was more reflective than the dull, brushed aluminum of the amps (which would tend to diffuse light) and the cables caught the light and were the brightest objects framed," the impulses from less reflective objects might be insignificant in comparison to the 'white-level' so that the contrast might become enhanced. The cables might appear ""blown out""... just a guess.

A few cable brands actually use reflective material in their outer jackets. It looks like that's what's happening here, JAs' camera flash bouncing back from the cable jakets.
