Knowing some of the background to this guy's comments, it is the old story of someone with a large but fragile ego who gets upset when a reviewer expresses a different opinion. You shouldn't take it so seriously, Carl.

I know i ain't gonna pay no $400 for an LP that he thinks sounds great either, his reviews may or may not be any better than others. But $400 for an LP, not me. thanks John

JA, tom P. also uses Whispers, and he did say he knows of some SERIOUS FLAWS in their design!!! I asked him, Huh, if it's so serious, why wouldn't Bill D. have cured it? He responded, Bill D. ain't god...so who knows. He aslo said for $100 I will tell you how to eliminate the FLAWS...I did not take him up on it. All this audio stuff is becoming mind F'ing after awhile!!! I do have some LP's and CD from his site, some closeouts, cutouts etc...sound fine. Not no $400LP's though, nope nope nope

Every speaker has FLAWS in their design. That is why they keep coming out with newer models. The designers cannot live with what they created so they make adjustments in manufacturing. The Legacy and Focus had to have the drivers replaced with drivers having larger magnets. Not only that but Legacy ended up raising the prices which is something DUP always complains about except in the case of Legacy. But of course they turned around and called it an HD upgrade. More BS, its DUPlicity.

DUP is a walking BILLBOARD for not purchasing Legacy speakers because DUP owns them and I do not know of one person who wants to be that tight with DUP.

He's like the internet equivalent of a constant 30 minute infomercial. But, instead of "Kaboom Toilet Cleaner" it's Legacy and Van Alstine. However, I'd miss him if he were gone and he does make some valid observations, albeit infrequently. He's probably easier to get along with in person and I suspect we like much of the same music.

Anyone who would wear black socks and shorts for a photo shoot is hard to dislike completely.

Carl does make some valid observations. Carl also has some interesting things to say. I've seen it happen but his ratio of meaningful posts to damming or interruptive childish posts is nearly 1:10. I don't get why Carl has to continue to knock Stereophile editors, reviewers, fellow forum member posts as well as products that he doesn't own or plan to purchase. Most of the products that Carl knocks he hasn't got the intellect to discuss intelligibly.

I have had time to analyze Carl and I feel that he ranks as an audio or stereo IQ idiot as far as technology is concerned. An idiot is shooting a 19 or less on the IQ scale. I feel fairly certain that Carl ranks fairly low in IQ having carried on conversations with him for almost three weeks now.

If Carl would drop the negativity and product attacks, I would be all for him being here. I had been reading the Stereophile forum for at least six months before I first posted. I got sick of Carl's attacks and driving off of forum members so I felt I had to step in and say something, and so I have.

In so far as the Legacy speakers go, they have flaws like any other product manufactured and the manufacturers reaction to defects are like those of any other manufacturer. Manufacturers rebuild their product lines every so often cyclically when technology or remarketing warrants it.

Carl as you stated treats this as an infomercial stage which makes him their shill. If Carl thinks he is doing a service to advertise the goods he has he is sorely mistaken because anyone who takes the time to read the forum for any length of time will come to the conclusion that Carl is disturbed. A person reading the forum for information and insight as to which speaker to purchase will read the forum to some depth and will look for answers as to their purchasing questions. Unfortunately for the products he advertises the readers will come away with a negative feeling.

We are in fact speaking about an important decision to most people. Spending more than $10,000 on speakers is a very important decision for anyone seeking to get into audio playback. I feel that Carl has been handed the monies required to make the purchase that he has as I see him unfit in acquiring that amount on his own. His family must have the capital to invest in him, for I do not see the judgment or mental capacity of an adult I see an immature and childish mind. We here at Stereophile are stuck with him until his mother/wife takes his keyboard away.

I also would not hang out with Carl. I haven't met anyone of Carl's mental capacity since jr. high or high-school. I haven't got time for any additional babysitting...I'm doing enough.

You guys don't give DUP enough credit. There is a big difference between intelligence and ability to communicate effectively. If you take the time to read what DUP has to say, you'll realize that MOST of his posts aren't off the wall rants as they may seem at first. Is he the most effective speaker or writer? No, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have something worthwhile to say.

Re: Worthless, ALWAYS Wrong, in all these mags especially MF

Alex,

I don't think you are reading every post or reply that Carl makes. He is nearly illiterate as far as high end audio goes. He could not for instance discuss a project that another forum member wrote about. The project was NOT simple but the concepts discussed were not to difficult. The audio off before it gets stepped on by DRM. Carl didn't have to engage the guy but he wasn't smart enough to keep quiet either. There is a problem in that...not knowing enough and then attacking a writer for speaking about a technology. Carl does this frequently, this is his identity. He does NOT know anything valuable other than he bought some speakers and an amp. While there may be no fault in not knowing there is a fault in bothering someone when you don't know and don't ask.

http://forum.stereophile.com/forum/showf...part=1&vc=1

John Atkinson an editor at Stereophile weighed in on the very thread we are writing within, regarding infighting with senior contributing editor Michael Fremer...and Carl got that one wrong too. If Carl does not like Stereophile, its' editors and the very nature of stereophile and audiophile related equipment and discussions then WTF* is Carl doing here?

Stereophile does not have the time nor want to engage Carl because Stereophile is a well respected organization...but the LITTLE ASS needs to go or to clean it up, but that isn't likely to happen.

Nearly illiterate!!!! I must work harder!!!! I will become fully functionaly illerate with more practice. But then how will i know when I get it right? Being I'm a TARD. It keeps me happy. This is cus' i mentioned that a speaker with small drivers, and they claim to be the end all to sonic nirvana, doesn't appear to be poosible, with what they seem to consit of to do it? I may be illiterate, but I ain't dumb. Other family memebers are that. I got the illiterate gene. Some of teh coolest speakers have DRIVERS. Pipe Dreams rows and rows of drivers, McIntosh latest setup looks cool, though their 3 piece pre amp is dopey, no reason for that complication besides marketing. But more drivers in a cabinet actually does do something. $100K TT's, don't think so. The bearing could never be that price, look how many prcise components are in a cr costing 1/3 that...Some things in high end are cool, many are nonsense. Sensible Sound this month is touting the old standard Technics SL1200 TT. Liek $500 with differetn standard cartridges, also talking bout' how high end TT's have gone way off base, with some real design BS. Why is it audiophiles go one way, and some good design logic is on teh other side? DD TT's no good in high end land, yet for broadcast and other use, even high quality listening, it's fine. Somethings just morph into a way of doing it, but think and maybe there is no logic to it after all. Like.....WIRES......lifts......magic wood blocks.......small speakers selling for big bucks, claiming to reproduce live music......illogical

Re: Worthless, ALWAYS Wrong, in all these mags especially MF

Hi,

I read the thread you provided and I saw nothing wrong with that discussion. The modification that the guy proposed didn't make sense to DUP, so he engaged him in a discussion. The discussion was cordial until the very end where the original poster started calling DUP names.

Re: this thread, it's an ongoing issue with MF specifically, not Stereophile editors in general. Having read DUP's numerous posts, I get a general idea of what he is looking for out of stereophile. I think he's looking for a more scientific approach to stereo reviewing. I think he wants them to call BS - BS and eliminate the hype from the reviews, have a more methodical approach and be generally much more critical of the equipment and technologies they review. If my understanding of the points DUP tries to make is correct, I don't think he's off his rocker. These aren't unreasonable demands and one doesn't have to throw out the baby with the bathwater by abandoning Stereophile completely just because he may feel certain processes need to be tweaked or modified.

DUP you never saw me say that raising wires off the ground was the way to go...so throwing that in my face does no good. I'm just not for you bashing ever little point where you don't understand anything technical. If the technology was explained to you as it has been...you still don't shut up.

And not everybody wants so many drivers in their homes to make it look like a disco, but if that is what you need then so be it.

And...if you're so technically capable explain the null nodes on the speakers to you have without referring to the documentation. DUP, I've got your number. You are a technical gadfly and do not understand the technologies you bash. OK...now go look up gadfly Carl.

Alex,

The modification didn't make sense to DUP because he is an audio illiterate. He only had to read the pages that the guy was directing him to at the time...they have been removed since because they tell of a design that can extract the sound at far above 44khz directly form an onboard DAC before DRM hits it.

Now Alex, do you understand what I am talking about because DUP/CARL does NOT.

See Dick, See Jane, See Jane tell Dick to get them speakers out of the house, they have too many drivers!!! I ain't no short bus illiterate, I have read Dick and Jane...and fully understood it. There is a secret meaning in teh story, look for teh hidden clues, unless of course you think it's clueless.

Look out DUP, it's a trick question.
Null Node is redundant. A node is a point along a standing wave where the wave has minimal amplitude. A null is a zero value.

I think he needs a drawing!

He's never read about nodes of any sort and wouldn't know one if it hung over his head, behind his head to the left or to the right. He would not know what to do to get the node to his nose or between his toes. I'm surprised he even bothers because his "hobby" is way over his head.

But what is amazing is that everyone here wants to put up with him. He has been here since '05. Thats two years. Lets recap his recent efforts. I don't have the time to continue to dig for the stuff but it is easy to find.

You think Linda R. still looks like that picture that was posted? Besides bad ears, your sight is failing. Or your definition of "beautiful" is as bad as your perception of good sound. Mr. Null Node Some of the best musicans can't even read music......I bet some of the best ears ain't trained either.....some of the worst listeners are highly trained, and imagine that they hear things like demagnetized plastic, and the sound of a wall outlet. Mr. Null Node...we will call you Nully for short.

HD is just a marketing term for sure, but they did update teh drivers, just like they did on teh previous FOSUC model, they then called it 20/20 which is clever being good Focus is 20/20. Yea, some will say it's a different value ain't it? HD, term is the latest buzz word in stuff, it is marketing hype for sure, but it's also an upgraded speaker, not just another new model like some outfits come out with every other month. Whisper been the same for years and years, it was due an update. Sure they raised teh price, they make teh stuff here, probably pay people living wages, unlike the majority of Chinese stuff coming in. Legacy has held it's prices pretty consistent over teh years, they could just charge $10K more for every model, and not have to raise the price a bit at a time.

hahahahahahahaha, diminished mental capacity.....makes me hear better, i don't get distracted by thoughts in my head. It's empty!!!! Or is it better to have it full of meaningless infomation? Which is better? Diminished, or full of garbage? My school bus was full length, not short. I managed to make it through high school....barely. HA! Soem of the best musicans are "diminished" Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Jose' Feliciano, Linda Ronstadt...so thanks for the compliment, I is diminshed, so i must being hearing it all properly, therefore, I know more than you. Hi guys.
Just checking in before heading over to the Home Entertainment Show. The Show's been a big success, I'm happy to say.

As for this discussion: thanks for all of your points, everyone. The health and happiness of this forum and the relationships it's forged is something many of us are invested in. If things come down to banning or keeping one particular member of our group, I am all for keeping him, for now. When times become difficult, we all have other tools we can use to smooth things over.

And, for now, I think we can close this particular thread. Please feel free to start a new thread if you'd like to continue this, or a related, discussion. Thanks again.
