First off welcome and glad to hear you are interested in getting back into vinyl.

There are a billion products available and until you have listened to a bunch of them, it will be tough to be able to understand reviews. Everything is glowing, but if you are familiar with the products the reviewer compare too, you will find a great deal of insight and once you have context, reviews can become shockingly helpful.

I am unfamiliar with the Hagerman Bugle. I am familiar with the Cambridge and they make a fine product. Another company worth considering is Pro-Ject. They both make excellent, modestly priced phono amps. The Pro-Ject Phono Box is a fine product and would be an alternative to Cambridge.

For speakers, some specs matter - some don't. For instance, frequency range matters largely because the lower a speaker goes, the more balanced it will usually sound though there are exceptions. Unfortunately, the only good way to tell if you like a speaker or not is to listen too it.

That being said, here are two options for speakers that I think are good sounding and may be worth your consideration. Also, they are returnable if you don't like them.

Infinity Primus P363 - a small floor standing speaker that goes down to 38hz which is pretty good bass response for most music. It is currently on sale at Crutchfield for $199 each, so spot on your budget of $400.

That other worth considering is a bookshelf speaker called the Wharfeldale Diamond 10.2. If goes to 40hz and for a bookshelf speaker, that is extraordinary. They are currently on clearance at Music Direct for $379 a pair.

These could not be more radically different speakers though. The Infinity's will be lighter and airier than the Wharfedale's and arguably are a touch bright. They are also super efficient and will be dramatically louder than the Wharfedales with the same amount of power. 50w of power will drive these to deafening volumes.

The Wharfedales on the other hand are warm and may even border on dark. They are also extremely inefficient and will require a fair amount of power to drive them well and operate at a lower impedance. I would look for about 90w into 6 ohms at the low end to drive them well in even a medium sized room (say 12'x 20'). They are rated for less than that and that means you won't damage them by delivering less power but they will sound better with a bit more power.

I can't answer which you will like better. I think most people find warmer speakers easier to listen too as they are less fatiguing but they are also less revealing, in my opinion. Certainly wait to hear others opinions and the other thing you could do is give a call to Crutchfield and Music Direct.

Finally, both retailers sell Cambridge and Pro-Ject and will have much more direct experience with those units and will be able to tell you which will be better for you.

Good luck to you.

I suggest that you get the Project Phono Box MM for your phono preamp; Needle Doctor sells it for $79. It is for moving magnet cartridges only, but moving coil cartridges are usually very expensive and I doubt that you will go there.

I would also suggest that you get a better phono cartridge. The Sumiko Oyster is only $79 from Needle Doctor, and that would probably give you a big sound quality upgrade, as would the Ortophon 2M Red for around $100.
I think the sound quality of your current cartridge is probably not very good.

The Infinity Primus P363 are indeed a great budget choice; there are few speakers for less than $500 that can compete with them. I even see them for $109 each on Amazon right now, which is less than half of the usual price; quite a deal.

Another amazing deal on speakers is the Dayton B652 speakers, which Parts Express sells for around $50 per pair or less. I have a stereo audio system in my home that cost over $20K, but I use a pair of these at my second home with a $400 Cambridge Audio amplifier, and the sound is pretty good. They are simply amazing for the price.

If you bought a phono pre amp, like the Parasound Zphono MM/MC Phono Stage $199 at AudioAdvisor why not look at the Audioengine 5+ powered speakers? The speakers are available at Crutchfield for $399 (They have a 60 day trial) These powered speakers are amazing for what they offer. That way the 2 purchases come in at your $600 price point.
Or the Fluance XL7S High Performance Two-way Bookshelf Surround Sound Speakers, they are $179 a pair
