A cure for Audio nervosa. Preferably ,one that can be self-administered. And to all a good night . . .
Forget about reality! If you could make any audiophile dream come true in 2001, whether for yourself or the entire industry, what would it be?
I'd create a national Audiophile Day, where all brands of new components can be purchased at 1/20th their MSRP. In return, the consumer must donate his previous components to a budding, less financially fortunate audiophile. It would expand the number of entry level enthusiasts, and boost the upgrade path dramatically! Dream on . . .
I'd wish the record companies copped a new attitude. We need more talent, new and even old, to fill the void that lately seems to be getting worse. There's not nearly as much new interesting stuff as there used to be. It's either too bland and pedestrian, or re-releases of older material. Sony should stop worrying about SACD so much and put the money into finding new music/bands. They could start by sampling files on the internet to find people who were frustrated with dealing with the system and ended up either doing it themselves or connecting with smaller labels.
My wish? That SACD would become a mass market sensation. Thousands of well recorded discs would be available by the end of the 2nd quarter. This aural revelation would coax millions to purchase their first entry level high end systems.
I wish that Sony would get everybody in their Marketing, Manufacturing, and Finance departments together and re-read the Betamax fiasco. Quality, affordability, and availability are the key issues. SACD, at the current high prices, will kill the format -- along with the unavailability of music and the impending format battle with DVD-A.
VERY HIGH END CD Player, Digital preamp, digital room correction and digital amp all as a package (maybe in one enclosure). Just think how much we would save on cables, and how much better it would sound than the 5 boxes and numerous separate interconnects it would replace !!!
Set a standard for the FireWire connection of DVD-Audio and stick with it. Have it out really early in 2001 so the by 2nd quarter of 2001, preamps and receivers from manufactures as well as players won't have to rely on analog connections to play the discs. That way I can buy a new receiver without worrying about not having this feature! Now that's dreaming:)
