Death to cable and replaced by HDTV and fiber optics!
Forget about reality! If you could make any audiophile dream come true in 2001, whether for yourself or the entire industry, what would it be?
I want a portable system that "hears" the song in my head and plays it back in the personal space surrounding me as I stand, sit, recline, or move. It should manufacture the sound, rather than just play it back, and would generate true instrumentals and vocals, not synthesize them. The system will be small enough to fit in a pocket, sturdy enough to last a lifetime, and be powered by my's body energy so I can lose weight by listening, or alternatively, I would need to eat a power lunch to crank up the volume. How's that for a fantasy?
My wish? Hit the jackpot, then: 1) move to a large house with five bedrooms; 2) customize large living room into dedicated listening room; 3) install a mechanized projection TV system with a retractable screen; 4) line the walls with maple CD shelves and book shelves; 5) customize the power system in the house; 6) buy the Infinity IRS V and Apogee Full Range; and 7) buy the larget Pass power amps, etc . And oh yeah, install a high security house alarm system with motion detector. Heck, for that matter, I should just hire an audio consultant and have him get me everything! He can bill me, too !
My ultimate audiophile dream for 2001 would be to make the development and application of nanotechnology arrive fully, so that everyone who wanted it could have state of the art audio gear (i.e., as good as human ears could ever need), and all LPs and digital discs or other source objects would be manufactured perfectly, and any imperfect but endearing old audio gear could be replicated exactly, and every musician would have an instrument of Stradivarius quality, and there would be enough macroeconomic ease so nearly everyone who wanted to be a musician could be one, and every audio nut would have plenty of time to listen to both live and recorded music, and . . .
make audio dealers realize they may actually sell more equipment in a more realistic presentation of the product very few people have neither the space or financial means for a dedicated perfectly acoustic listening room thats my industry wish on a personnal note I hope to find the perfect speaker
An all-in-one digital amplifier with a computer. This would be located in a central location in the house away from the music room. All the music would be recorded on a bank of hard drives. The signal would be transmitted to the speakers in digital format to eliminate cable problems. A microphone would be to placed at the listener's sitting position. The computer would calculate flat frequency response based on room reflections and adjust the signal accordingly. If I didn't like the flat reponse, the computer could adjust the response to reflect the sound qualities of my favorite place. Musical heaven.
That this latest batch of "purists" -- this time rushing to SACD instead of tubes and vinyl -- get over themselves. It's DVD-A now and it's going to BE DVD-A. Sony just doesn't have follow-through when it comes to format development and this time (unlike with Beta), they simply don't have the clearly superior product.
