At what price would you seriously consider buying an SACD player? Why?

Sony announced last week that they are lowering the price of their latest SACD player to $3500. Is this the right price to get your attention?

Depending on set up and performance we all know that external DAC most time gives better performance in CD

I can't see myself spending more than about $1500 on a digital audio player. Anything more for me would be overkill. My listening habits alone wouldn't justify the cost. Besides, the land of diminishing returns always comes to mind when spending a lot of money on digital audio. As soon as you get into the format, along comes another one! I'm still waiting on those "perfect sound forever" discs!

You can get a decent sounding entry level CD player for $800 (Rega Planet). At over 4 times the price for an entry level SACD, is it 4 times the sound quality? For me, $1000 might make me think about it.

Unless there are sub-$1000 players available, SACD will be a flop.

depends on the cost of the disc

But only if software continues to be issued.

In spite of all the format standardization drama, it's not really that big a deal, is it? $500 should easily be able to do it to 98% target specification objectives—if the recordings themselves are up to it.

If Sony lowers the price to about maybe $1500 (about the price of a good CD player), then maybe we'll talk. $3500 is still too much money.

I am not interested. Thanks!

SACD will probably end up doing a DIVX Dive! Not to mention they want to jack the price up because of the Sony name...

Price is not the major issue. I bought Beta because of its quality, then invested in a laserdisc player (which never really caught on in Germany, but I could at least play the discs bought in the US). As long as these guys in the industry add silly crap like country codes to DVD (so I can't buy anything in the US) and fight over SACD vs. DVD, I won't waste my money on them.

SACD will never become an accepted format. DVD-Audio will be the most common format. SACD will be the next Beta.

...um...yeah...I want to spend 3500 so I can hear like 5 different cds available for sacd.

It has to be @ or below the Panosonic entry level players because there is more risk (only Sony is pushing DSD while 4 globals are pushing DVD-a)

I will not buy any unit until "Digital Out" is available. I would pay more for a unit that is "open" architecture. It must support CD, DVD, DVD-Audio, and SACD.

When most of my friends have a problem spending even $1000 on an entire system, I find it hard to justify spending $3000 on anything where software isn't going to be available.

I always intend to buy the least expensive good one. Note the paving on the road to Hell.

Dave B.'s picture

It's unlikely this format will fly at any price until there is more software available at reasonable cost.

Mark Gaddis's picture

At this price, I hope it would also play DVD-Audio discs. I don't want to have two different players for the two formats.

Do I look like Bill Gates? A grand represents a major sacrifice for me, and I'm not alone in that category. If only neurosurgeons and developers can afford a new format, it's going to fail.

I wouldn't even consider SACD without DVD-Audio capability. Greed once again raises its ugly head as manufacturers ignore their buyers' interests. But, ultimately, they will have no choice but to produce comprehensive protocol capabilities for CD players.

Money is of no object in my decision to purchase a Sony SACD. I am more concerned with the overall sound quality of the component itself. I believe that it will be quite some time before the true quality of SACD will be attainable. I could have purchased a SACD for the same price that I had intended to spend on a CD player. Surprisingly, I chose the CD player. In my opinion, the CD player that I purchased is currently better sounding than the SACD. In addition, I could not stand to see anything SONY in my system. Sony, in my eyes, will forever be thought of as a Mid-Fi brand. Sorry Sony lovers, I think it sucks.

How much time do I have to listen to CD each day on average? 10 minutes!

Bill Endelman's picture

Especially since we will still need a player for CD's, DVD Audio, etc.

Robert R. Greene's picture

SACD will not get my attention for a long time because I don't think the type of music I like will be recorded on it for a long time: punk rock and undergound rock.

Robert N.'s picture

With all the press about SACD, DVD Audio I would consider leasing one. Or just following the sane route and do nothing.

Andrew Bacon's picture

Looks like they are sweating. I'll pay more if needed when the value and software are there. Not before!

Big T's picture

Actually, I would prefer a combi player with nothing but digital outputs.
