What next?

Hello,

I've been working on putting together an office system. The room is probably 15 x 12 with 10' ceilings.

Right now I'm using iTunes w apple lossless, a Cullen mod 4 PS Audio DL3, an Arcam A90, a pair of Paradigm Studio 20 v4s, and a Polk Audio PS-303 sub.

The sound is pretty good at moderate volume. (About 50 - 60% based on the Arcam volume meter...) But I'd like things to be more dynamic. Not just louder, but more enveloping and punchy. (When I turn it up it gets much louder but just starts hurting my ears...)

I have a Velodyne SPL-1000R coming. That should tighten up the bottom end. It's the most sub I could justify for this system. But I fear either the A90 or the Studio 20s (or both) are also going to fall short.

Thoughts of where to focus my attention?

Thanks

keith

Re: What next?

When you say "office system" are your speakers flanking your computer monitor or do you actually have a listening area or the speakers out in front of your desk, or something like that?

It doesn't seem that not disturbing others is an issue, so I won't mention hi-end headphones.

Wait and see what you think after the woofer is in place. Sometimes, it can make an amazing difference in how you perceive your regular speakers.

Call me biased, but room treatment, and especially bass traps, will help tighten up the low end and improve overall clarity more than pretty much anything else.

Re: What next?

Yes, the speakers flank an LCD panel monitor. I hear no interference from the monitor, but I'm sure the placement is not optimal. (But not terrible either...)

I could expand the distance between speakers from 32 inches (c-c) to up to about 8 feet. But I think I'm sitting in the sweet spot now, given that I have to work at the desk the speakers are on.

I've considered getting a pair of Denon D5000s. I've never been able to fully embrace headphones as I feel cut off from the outside world. But maybe I could get used to it. No, db levels - within reason - are not an issue.

I'll take the advice on waiting for the sub. I like adding one piece at a time.

The Paradigms received a great review. I didn't detect any waffling about "sounds great at moderate decibel levels". I've heard lots of people state that the A90 sounds great but needs to be bi-amped. So I suspect the amp (which sounds great at moderate volume) might be taxed as I go for a bigger sound.

I guess another trip to the stereo store might be in order. I'll ask to a/b the speakers with the Arcam and something with higher ratings.

Re: What next?

Hello again. The speakers might still be breaking, they are going to take about 100-150 hours before they sound like themselves. Out of the box they will sound constricted, a little grainly, and a little thin. As they break in the highs will sweeten, the speaker will gain body. Also the Arcam and DAC need to break in too. I would recommend against changing anything too quickly.
