i've been collecting vinyl longer, and you can get more vinyl for your dollar( used anyway). but my cd collection is catching up. either way, you can never have too much music.

I really don't know how many CD's I have, but its way over 1000. On the other hand, I don't recall the last time I bought a vinyl album. It was a very long time ago. The ones I have now are holdovers from my old collection of which I had gotten rid of many. I was and am one of those who hates surface noise on vinyl with a passion. And the thought of going back to vinyl and its background noise is not acceptable. I was never a tweker per say, so the thought of not dealing with an ornary turntable any more than neccessary is just fine by me. I would rather sweeten up the sound of my system to deal with the occasional harshness of digital than mess around with vinyl.

About 40/60 CD/vinyl ratio. This isn't telling though, I've only been collecting vinyl for 3 months, I've been collecting CDs for years. I love vinyl, and visit used record stores as often as possible to find new music.

I feel like shy violet at the school dance who mysteriously becomes the object of a young man's interest! Last week you wanted to know how many dinosaurs there were; now you want to know how much "food" we have left. Ok, I'll bite: I've got lots (meaning I only purchase on CD what I can't find on vinyl, or that which is new). Hang on, Mikey, I think they're paying attention to us now!!

I listen to CDS, but have never discarded my vinyl collection which goes back to high school days. My estimate is 5,000 vinyl to aboutb 400 CDs.

I have been buying more vinyl lately, though.

Music compelled me to purchase a CD player and CD's but my musical soul is nourished by my vinyl with help from VPI, SME and Clearaudio.

I love the sound of vinyl, but I love music too much to be limited to music playback that requires so much ritual and preparation.

Since upgrading my arm and cartridge to Rega/Ortofon MC I am enjoying my vinyl more and more. I have a large collection of both LP and CD and am discovering how good the LP's are, even the older ones, in comparison to CD's.

but the vinyl collection's growing faster than the discs!

What a stupid question! I got rid of all the dirty, popping, warped collection as soon as perfect sound forever became possible for us the great unwashed! So, my CDs to LPs ratio is infinite!

50/50, I jumped on the cd revolution in 1984. At that time my Lp collection was huge. Then my system was not very good, so the cd sound with my first cd player(Radio Shack) was a major improvement to the sound of my system. I would still buy Lp's from time to time, but back then the cd was number one. So over the years my cd collection has equalled my Lp collection.

Actually its 95%, but I'm still adding lps faster than CDs so I may be at 96% shortly.

Fremer finally did it! He talked me into buying a new turntable - a Music Hall MMF-5. I hadn't planned to do that and, no, you can't have it back! At times, it sounds better than my carefully assembled $2,000 digital playback system. Fremer, I owe you (just don't hold your breath waiting for a check). Muchas gracias.

Only untill I can afford a High-end record player.

100% CDs. Outside of work I haven't spun vinyl since I was 7. It might be nice to try it again, but it sounds expensive. While vinyl may be fun, digital is too practical.

Vinyl = the archaic absurdity that discredits audiophile integrity.

I actually have about 30% CDs and 70% vinyl, but I selected 20/80 because that's the direction my collection is going. I'm buying a lot more LPs than CDs these days.

Rob Moores's picture

Although my collection is predominantly CD orientated i have only just "discovered" (if you will excuse the pun) vinyl and due to the fantastic quality on offer will be redressing the imbalance as soon as possible

Analoque still rules !

I will never give up my records. In fact, I bought an Oracle Delphi Mk V turntable and a Graham 2.0 tonearm last year (upgraded the Sota Sapphire). Digital is just not there yet.

Less than 50 cd's to about 4,000 LP's.. I don't have anything against buying a cd; for me it's still a matter of priorities- I'm still trying to build a decent collection of LP's .

My original CD purchases were to supplement my LP collection of 3000+ jazz LPs. Now my CDs number 2800 and at times dupl. LPS.Although I tend to play more CDs I feel the sonic qualities of LPs are better. An early concern was that out of print LPs were often not available on CD which is not often true any longer.

Larry Elmer's picture

For two reasons, one is the lack of availability of the music on CD, two why would I replace a good source with one that is not as good?

Stereophile should continue to point out the superiority of early releases versus the new remastered CDs. Even Mikey shies away from that, with good reason, of course. Still.

For a long time in the 80's,I purchased only CD's, and rarely even listened to my vinyl. Eventually, I smartened up, and now rarely purchase a CD, unless it is something I really want, and not available on vinyl. Most of my purchases now are from used LP dealers, and mail order firms selling new vinyl.

Dave Morris's picture

Unfortunately, I have had my vinyl stored away in the depths of my guest bedroom closet for years. This is due to my turntable crapping out years ago and my continued investment in upgrading my digital equipment. The neat thing is when I eventually get a new turntable, I will be able to play some treasures like my Japanese progressive rock and ECM label avant-jazz recordings that will carry me back to the 70's and 80's.

Actually it is more like 5% CD, 94% vynil, 1% open rell and 78'.

DeLad's picture

I mainly listen to cd's but I like to get some of my favourite tracks on vinyl to experience the real deal.
