i've been collecting vinyl longer, and you can get more vinyl for your dollar( used anyway). but my cd collection is catching up. either way, you can never have too much music.
Last week's vote question about vinyl prompted a landslide of votes. Which impels us to ask, what is the ratio of CDs to LPs that you own?
I really don't know how many CD's I have, but its way over 1000. On the other hand, I don't recall the last time I bought a vinyl album. It was a very long time ago. The ones I have now are holdovers from my old collection of which I had gotten rid of many. I was and am one of those who hates surface noise on vinyl with a passion. And the thought of going back to vinyl and its background noise is not acceptable. I was never a tweker per say, so the thought of not dealing with an ornary turntable any more than neccessary is just fine by me. I would rather sweeten up the sound of my system to deal with the occasional harshness of digital than mess around with vinyl.
I feel like shy violet at the school dance who mysteriously becomes the object of a young man's interest! Last week you wanted to know how many dinosaurs there were; now you want to know how much "food" we have left. Ok, I'll bite: I've got lots (meaning I only purchase on CD what I can't find on vinyl, or that which is new). Hang on, Mikey, I think they're paying attention to us now!!
50/50, I jumped on the cd revolution in 1984. At that time my Lp collection was huge. Then my system was not very good, so the cd sound with my first cd player(Radio Shack) was a major improvement to the sound of my system. I would still buy Lp's from time to time, but back then the cd was number one. So over the years my cd collection has equalled my Lp collection.
Fremer finally did it! He talked me into buying a new turntable - a Music Hall MMF-5. I hadn't planned to do that and, no, you can't have it back! At times, it sounds better than my carefully assembled $2,000 digital playback system. Fremer, I owe you (just don't hold your breath waiting for a check). Muchas gracias.
My original CD purchases were to supplement my LP collection of 3000+ jazz LPs. Now my CDs number 2800 and at times dupl. LPS.Although I tend to play more CDs I feel the sonic qualities of LPs are better. An early concern was that out of print LPs were often not available on CD which is not often true any longer.
For a long time in the 80's,I purchased only CD's, and rarely even listened to my vinyl. Eventually, I smartened up, and now rarely purchase a CD, unless it is something I really want, and not available on vinyl. Most of my purchases now are from used LP dealers, and mail order firms selling new vinyl.
Unfortunately, I have had my vinyl stored away in the depths of my guest bedroom closet for years. This is due to my turntable crapping out years ago and my continued investment in upgrading my digital equipment. The neat thing is when I eventually get a new turntable, I will be able to play some treasures like my Japanese progressive rock and ECM label avant-jazz recordings that will carry me back to the 70's and 80's.
