Old LP

About 90% vinyl, for several reasons: (1) There's so much good music on vinyl you can't get on CD, (2) vinyl sounds more like real music, and (3) LPs can cost a lot less than CDs, at least used, but this is a lot less important than the first two reasons.

I just purchased the first affordable Cd player that sounds almost as good as ordinary vynil. The speciality Lp

I don't care what she's wearing, as long as she moves me.

I made the bad mistake of getting rid of a lot of vinyl when CDs first hit market.

There wd be more LP's, probably 100% if new releases were still vinyl pressed (I buy lots of contemporary jazz ). Playing wise I wd say that it is a 50/50 split. But still, the superiority of analog never ceases to amaze. I mean still, at this late stage in the digital debate, that is irrefutable!

I listen to tapes which were recorded from my vinyl collection on a Nakamichi Dragon in my long hours of business travel in my car. If I could rig a viable turntable set- up in my car, I would be elated. Actually, a buddy of mine in high school tried that trick using a BSR table in the trunk of his Karmann Ghia (which, of course, was in the front of the car). The only problem was that the turntable rumbled louder than his Ghia did. Needless to say, at home I listen exclusively to vinyl on my VPI TNT Hot Rod/Graham Memorial /Clearaudio Insider rig. As a result, I don't fit into any of the voting categories listed because you left out audio tape. For shame!

44% SACDs, 30% CDs, 26% 96kHz 24 Bit DVD DADs. But I now only buy SACDs, why throw my money away on inferior CDs, and 96/24 is excellent but SACD blows it away! Long Live SACD!

I buy Vinyl new releases whenever possible which thankfully has become more abundant as of late. Couple that with very inexpesive used records my collection is very much in favor of vinyl. In fact this last month I have purchased 207 albums and only 1 CD and that wasn't even for me!

To be exact, I have 94% CDs and 6% vinyl. The total number of CDs is 8348, comprising of 5595 pop, 648 compilation, 283 soundtrack, 204 classical and 1618 Chinese, all catalogued in Microsoft Excel: indeed a life-time of beautiful music.

Although, my present collection consists of more CDs than vinyl, over the past 3 years I have purchased considerably more vinyl LPs than CDs. Those little disks just don't seem to allow the music to "get up in me" like vinyl!

100 % vinyl, of course! Sorry, digitalphiles but vinyl is final!! It's not going to go away - no matter how hard the electronics industry tries. Thank you to all you fellow audiophiles who acknowledge that analog means music while digital mean money for mediocrity! It's great to know that I am not talking to myself about this!

I am looking into getting back to vinyl in the near future. So I will have to see if I can find any new albums of music I like.

just beginner for LP

Sometimes though, CD's digitized harshness just makes me yearn for the sweet analog sound from a good turntable.

Actually, it's 1% CDs 99% vinyl.

Actually, it's about 30%.but that choice wasn't available.

Still no contest.

About 1,000 CDs and 200 LPs, so that's about a 5:1 ratio. I think that's about the same ratio for new purchases, too... for every LP I find that sounds interesting, I find about 5 CDs.

LPs sound a lot better on my system so I don't play CDs much. They're easier to use but harder to listen to. Five minutes is all I can stand usually.

CD's catching up in numbers. I'd purchase more vinyl, but not at $20 a pop.

Months ago, Got a big collection, but they sound much the same as the CDs (Linn Mimik and Linn LP12!) and they're so much more convenient.

Michael Chernay's picture

I like the sound of vinyl and everything but the sound of cd is close, the only reason i have more cd's is because of the ease of use and the durability

I really am rather closer to 70% cd but since it started at 100% vinyl you guess which way it seems to be going. But this makes me think. In a year or two the question will be about the ratio of cd, vinyl, sacd, dvd audio or whatever else? Now, is all this starting to look rather silly, or not?

Vinils are noisy. I want to hear the music and a little bit of upsampling on CDs does the trick.

Harald Gaul's picture

Burning selections of Lp's onto CD's for use in my car during daily commute. Thanks to your excellent article last year I went the computer route and have not regretted it.

I only buy music I like to listen to. I also want value for my money. For the most part, I get better value for my money on LPs than on CDs.

Gary N Dolin's picture

While most vinyl sounds better than most CDs, it is a much less convenient medium. I simply cannot bring myself to purchase new vinyl, although I do purchased used LPs on occasion.

Mike Rivera's picture

I have 350+ CD's to zero vinyl. I've found with my 42 year-old ears and mid-range high-end system, CD's sound super. I'm not even rushing to SACD or DVD-A. they would have to sound "much" better for me to upgrade again.

Eric Fretz's picture

Most of the LP's were purchased before acquiring a CD player in the late '80s. I listen more to CD's now but still listen to the LP's on a regular basis.
