LYLE LOVETT: Joshua Judges Ruth; ALLISON KRAUSs: Forget About It; SARAH EVANS: No Place That Far. All are excellent recordings that take turns in the CD transport.
New music, or a fresh interpretation of an old classic, is what keeps a music lover's life interesting. What three releases have been in heavy rotation for you recently?
SONNY ROLLINS: Our Man in Jazz (Classic Records 45rpm, a real pain because of constantly having to change records); WAGNER: The Ring (Boulez on LP); BEETHOVEN: String Quartets (both the Emerson and Guarneri Quartets). The recent purchase of a new phono cartridge has me re exploring my collection with some wonderful surprises. Somehow CD's are never relistened to over and over again, with the exception of Sony's Horwitz reissue. I have two CD Players ( Proceed and CAL Icon).
RADIOHEAD: Kid A (visceral, aquatic, schizophrenic); BELLE & SEBASTIAN: The Boy With The Arab Strap (mellow and sleepy, like Alka-Seltzer Plus cold medicine); STEVE TIBBETTS: Bye Bye Safe Journey (really cool eclectic mix of instruments, I love it!).
DIZZY GILLESPIE AND THE UNITED NATION ORCHESTRA: Live at the Royal Festival Hall (Enja 6044-2); OSCAR PETERSON: Oscar in Paris: Oscar Peterson Live at the Salle Pleyel (Telarc 2CD-83414); ASTOR PIAZZOLLA: The Central Park Concert (Chesky Records JD107).
It's impossible to choose only three, of course, but here are some of the ones I've been listening to lately: MILES DAVIS QUINTET: Round About Midnight (Columbia LP reissue, originally recorded 1955/56); MISHA ALPERIN: North Story (ECM CD, 1997); ROGER DRINKALL; DIAN BAKER: 20th Century Masterpieces for Piano and Cello (Debussy, Barber, Rachmaninoff, etc.) (Wilson Audio CD, 1994?).
GRATEFUL DEAD: Ladies and Gentlemen . . . The Grateful Dead (4 CD set from Fillmore East,April 1971 - mastered from the original 2 track tapes and it sounds great!); KEITH JARRETT TRIO: Whisper Not; THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE: the new box set - on vinyl!
