Emmylou Harris' Cowgirl's Prayer, Rollin's Band Weight, Naxos Collection of Messien's works
New music, or a fresh interpretation of an old classic, is what keeps a music lover's life interesting. What three releases have been in heavy rotation for you recently?
METALLICA: Master of Puppets (The instrumental "Orion" has become my life's soundtrack lately.); BOSTON: Boston (Original LP! Side A is just classic rock at its best!); INDIGO GIRLS: Rites of Passage ("Galileo" and "Romeo & Juliet" for my emotional side).
My first CD on heavy rotaion is ERIC CLAPTON: Pilgrim(although I am not a fan of Clapton, this CD really captivated me while listening to it at a friend's home). I immediately went out and bought it. It is mesmerizing and really draws you into the music. The second CD on my heavy rotation is TEARS FOR FEARS: Tears Roll Down (Greatest Hits). I saw this band when they were still together and it was one of the best live shows I had ever witnessed. They were one of the very few bands that came quite close to sounding as they did on the disc. The third CD is PETER GABRIEL: Shaking the Tree. I've always been a fan and this collection expresses his changing styles and even though some of the songs do sound dated there are others that are timeless classics. His voice is rather haunting and poetic. The duet with Kate Bush is absolutely stunning.
Gladiator soundtrack (Decca records 289 467 094-2) -- some of the best musical scores today are being written for the movies; RAY MONTFORD: One Step Closer (Softail Records 2K01) -- acoustic guitar at its finest, very full and rich sound; LEE RITENOUR: Alive In L.A. (GRP Records GRSD9882) -- live jazz guitar has never sounded better. Fantastic!
MCCOY TYNER: with Stanley Clarke and Al Foster (Telarc SACD 63488SA) - great music and a fine recording, these guys come right into your music room to play; OSCAR PETERSON, RAY BROWN, MILT JACKSON: The Very Tall Band (Telarc SACD 83443SA) - Very good music selection, excellent performances, and terrific recording, especially with venue acoustics and audience sounds from the Blue Note; PATRICIA BARBER: Nightclub (Blue Note/Premonition 27290) - standards via Barber's special interpretation. This intimate recording feels like Patty's crooning while holding my hands on a Manhattan rooftop looking at a nighttime skyline.
ERIC CLAPTON/B.B. KING: Ridin' With The King (my vote for album of the year); JIMMY BUFFETT: Buffett Live: Tuesdays, Thursdays And Saturdays; Mosaic's Complete Lee Morgan/Wayne Shorter Vee Jay Recording. But that's today, who knows what tommorrow will bring?
Bruckner: Symphony #9 (Reference Recordings); FLOWER KINGS: Stardust We Are; REROPOLIS: Alive on Planet Earth (This band is the best progressive rock band I have discovered in years. I can't get enough of them. I'm trying to find their entire catalog); ERIC JOHNSON: Alien Love Child.
