Whaaaaa? Man- the guy that basically invented punk rock...gone. Sad day, though he hadn't done much for some time as far as I can tell.
Basically invented Punk Rock? What about the Stooges? MC5? Sonics? Ramones? New York Dolls?
McLaren was an interesting character, and he'll be missed.
But part of me will always remember that he also left John Lydon in San Francisco with no money or passport when the Pistols broke up. Flew off to Brazil to record with Ronnie Biggs, and didn't even have the decency to ensure that Lydon could get home or even had money to eat or call home. (Richard Branson ended up getting him out of there.)
He was great in A Clockwork Orange and his new MP4-12C is featured in Car & Driver this month.
