Magnepans and Audio Research are a great combination. Audio Research is some of the most neutral tube gear out there. The 3.6s are one of the best values in high end. They are just a steal! I've never heard Magnepan and VTL together. I bet that would be killer too. If you are set on tubes running the Magnepans those are probably the best two companies to consider.
For a slightly tubey sound from a solid state amp you might also consider the McIntosh MC402. I've heard that a lot with Magnepan 3.6 and that's a great match too.
Yes, ARC and Magnepan are a great match but the ARCs capable of driving the 3.6s (REF210, 610) are unfortunately a little out of my budget.
I also like the idea of autobias/fault sensing.
