That probably says as much about you as it does about them. It sounds like you didn't brag about (or, more innocuously, "describe") your system and they probably haven't heard you talk much about audio gear. Otherwise, they would probably feel obligated to compliment you on it.
In case this isn't clear - that is a compliment.
Sometimes, I tell others that they should experience a movie through a good system, not a Bose HTiB-type, an invite them over to listen.
Most of the time I don't tell them. Then they hear the system and remark how the sound is so "clear". They look at the brand of equipment and wonder wehre those came from. Then I give them the real story: the equipment and interconnects were modded to sound better than before. They sort of lose interest, as they don't want to modify their equipment, whether it's even feasible. But they do hear the difference outright.
I have given up on having friends over to listen. They always end up talking. Just like trying to listen to live music, everyone around me always wants to hoop and holler the whole time and never listens.
At least that's my excuse that I have no friends and don't go out.
I especially note at shows that even audiophiles cannot seem to master the notion that "listening" is a verb.
You are clearly a discerning gentleman of class and integrity.
