your budget for your upgrade and perhaps even by component. With the Yamaha stuff you're looking at about $4000 for the amplifier and cd player. The Bryston B-100 SST is $4200. So what, $7000 max for the amp and source?
I don't think you want to necessarily get a new amp with less output, even if it is considered "cleaner".
For a tuner, I'm a bit biased, but I'd look into getting a well renowned vintage tuner in very good condition or that has been restored. No remote, but you will get a better performing tuner. http://www.fmtunerinfo.com/ Unless you are tied to digital radio signals, good ole FM sure sounds great with a good vintage tuner.
I can go to 7k, but I'm more comfortable for both (or all) pieces to be 4k-5k.
You make a good point: I connect to cable radio (and have DAB+ portable radios in other rooms). I suppose it begs a new question: is it worth upgrading the tuner at all? It's my most used source, as the family has the radio on all day, but not really used for critical listening.
I am able to get the Bryston for under 4k FWIW - again, what would I feed it?
is a great CD player that would likely work pretty well with the Bryston.

The tuner you have should work just fine for how you described it is used.
You might want to listen to a Bladelius Thor MK-II integrated amplifier. Looks pretty impressive, but I don't know where you can find one in the US. Swedish company.
