This is tough because there are pros and cons to each table. The RP1 with performance pack does have that upgraded Bias2 cartridge while the Planar 1 has an improved tonearm and the Planar 2 has a much better tone arm. Since these are new, I doubt anyone who is not working at an audio store that sells a lot of tables can actually know the difference at this point.

I would call Needle Doctor and discuss it with them and they also sell Music Halls MMF 2.3 and the ProJect Debut Carbon which are also nice tables worth considering in this price range. Additionally, they will sell and install other cartridges. Based on your budget and the type of music you listen too, they will be able to offer you the most relevant advice.

I have purchased 2 turntables, an integrated amp, a power amp, a phono stage and a stereo rack from them and have been pleased with the advice I have been given, the prices and service from them. They have not always tried to upsell me and when I have talked to other people in the industry, the advice I received is consistent.

I recommend the Music Hall MMF-2.3 turntable, which is $499 complete with cartridge from Needle Doctor.

I'm currently trying to choose between the project debut carbon (520$CAN) and the new rega planar 1 (550$CAN). Did you find anything else out?
