Contrary to the opinion you might form from reading here, most Aussies I've encountered on other sites are knowledgeable, decent, articulate, sensible, sane people and they are often kind enough to warn us Americans about the hopeless mess that social reform legislation will make of our country.

It's laughable the extents to which right wing Americans feel the need to go to puff them, selves up.
The world is not fixated on the agrarian economy of the 18th century.
One day you might like to rejoin the planet.
In the meantime we'll let you dwell on in your coma.

One of my neighbors is a Kiwi. He's a blast and loves living in Texas. When his company finished their job here and required him to relocate back to New Zealand, he and his wife decided to stay rather than move back. He said we have a lot in common...Texans and Kiwis, that is.

"This joy will not be a momentary display, but will go deep into their hearts and they'll forever speak of this day and rejoice!"

And he said: "My Children, henceforth I declare our Church dissolved so that we may actually follow the teachings of Jesus. We will sell all our hoarded treasures and vast land holdings all over the world, give them to those in need, abdicate our worldly power, turn in all pedophile priests as we should have years ago, and start the difficult of learning humility as equals amongst you all...

Oh shit, was the microphone actually ON???!!!"

You have no understanding of the good works the Catholic Church does, or comprehend the millions of people it feeds and clothes and helps educate. The millions that are given medical care, hope and compassion. So easy to find sin and human frailty in others...look in the mirror and ask if you are without flaws. Do you care for the sick and needy? Can you provide the hope and solace to the forgotten? Some people actually believe in Jesus and the Church for alot of very good reasons. Corruption and human failings are ever present in all aspects of human endeavor. You are not immune, I am not immune and the Church is certainly not immune. All we can do is strive to improve ourselves and our institutions.

Really, you know how much I know about everything? How did you develop this limited mind-reading ability?

The Catholic church, throughout the ages, has done what? Suppressed science, supported Feudalism, the Divine Right of Kings, crusaded against Islam and turned a scholarly society to jihad, used the Inquisition to halt science and freedom of speech, ...

Against this, they do have some function in charity.

How about now, when the Zinger (sorry, the man is contemptable) is making apologia for child abuse based on an appeal to prejudice against atheism in his message to Ireland.

No, it's not the atheists' fault that some priest abused a bunch of boys, Mr. Ratzinger.

I have no problem in following the teachings of Jesus and would a be a fool to say I can come even close to doing so. But the Catholic Church, started by a Roman emperor as a way of consolidating power, has a long and violent history to answer for. At best, it's a wash as to whether you can call it positive or negative.

On balance they have shown themselves to be the perfect example of "you keep the cup on the outside clean while inside it is filthy." Spoke by the man himself, Jesus. He constantly advocated renouncing wealth and power, especially for the religious elite, and it should be obvious that he'd be appalled at what's been done in His name by the church. Just read "The Grand Inquisitor" section in the Brothers Karamazov- perhaps the best critique ever written.

A leader from the Spanish Inquisition encounters Jesus, who has made his return to earth. Jesus is rejected by the Inquisitor who puts him in jail and then says, "Why hast thou come now to hinder us? For Thou hast come to hinder us, and Thou knowest that.. We are working not with Thee but with him [Satan]... We took from him what thou didst reject with scorn, that last gift he offered Thee, showing Thee all the kingdoms of the earth. We took from him Rome and the sword of Caesar, and proclaimed ourselves sole rulers of the earth... We shall triumph and shall be Caesars, and then we shall plan the universal happiness of man".

So how is that the man who told the story of the Good Samaritan, that the meek and poor shall inherit the earth, that Love thy Neighbor is the only important commandment other than love they God, is constantly invoked by the same people who are more concerned about keeping their money, guns and "rights"?

That'll teach me. I try to inject a little humor at a time when most of what is going on isn't at all funny, and I wind up unleashing a scathing anti-Catholic tirade. I have to admit I didn't see that coming, particularly in a group consisting largely of liberals who regularly proclaim their sensitivity and tolerance. We live and learn.

Born and raised Catholic. One day while studying liberal arts I realized that the Catholic Church is actually what is left of the Roman Empire.

Oh, now I get it!--my bad for not realizing a joke about the Pope bitch-slapping a woman in front of a cheering stadium was actually about light-hearted tolerance! Buwahahahah- what a knee slapper that was! Really funny stuff- good times.

And you wonder about a "time when most of what is going on isn't at all funny." Yeah, that sort of stuff really brings people together for a real feel-good laugh!

Live and learn indeed.

You don't understand, he was hitting a liberal woman. That's ok if you "get the joke", I guess.

I think we're all hypocrites. Can't avoid it. Makes us all human and makes us all the same. Though some, like Mother Theresa, Doctors Without Borders and Lamont's family, have a wonderful capacity for selflessness, sacrifice and good works. They show us the way.

Since we're so alike and we share a common love of music and hi-fi it would be great if we could disagree with creativity, humility and good will. Like I do.

Having been raised in a Catholic family and educated parochially I can assure you that Catholics are astounded at the pervasiveness of priest abuse of children and deeply ashamed of the many who have perpetrated these crimes on the innocent. You'd think they would believe there is a special place in hell for them.

But as we wrestle with our consciences over our own venial mistreatment of our fellow man, we can only surmise these priests are sociopathic monsters with no remorse for the consequence of their corrosive appetites.

The Irish priests in my hometown parish were mean drunks, but they never touched us except in anger (I was a particularly inept altar boy prone to nervous mistakes at Mass). The Servite teaching order at school were the most educated, disciplined and joyful examples of Christ working through others I have known. They made high school bearable. We knew about sexual misconduct in the clergy because they told us about it, as did our friends returning from the seminary. It was a real problem in the 60's/70's and obviously it has gotten worse. So the harsh criticism of the church is not surprising.

J_J is the worst kind of hypocrite. Last presidency he was spewing that same shit he is condemning today. What goes around comes around. Life is a shit sandwich and every day we take another bite. But not chickenshit motherfuckers like J_J. No, his shit is ice cream until it hits the fan. He believes denial is a river in Africa. That yellow streak up his back is not genetic. His mommy gave him too many enemas with that hose and red bag once too many times.

I responded to dbowker, not you...Kid Dynomite! Sure is satisfying looking back at the pageantry of humanity through the cool distant lens of 21rst century world cultures glasses. Might have been a little different living it however, but don't let reality and a deep understanding of humanity and it's complex mix of cultures and religions slow you down any. Of course "out of context" seems to be fave for you liberal atheists. FYI, Islam requires Jihad against pretty much all other religions as a matter of doctrine....great fun beheading!

Well, FWIW, Lamont was obviously mocking my admiration because he's uncomfortable with praise. When I complimented your woodworking skills you were equally humble, but in a different way. I just reek of goodwill...or something.

I'm sorry you misunderstand the teachings of Jesus and His allegorical tales. He was not always peaceful and docile. He never said wealth was in itself Evil or that it should be avoided (he was afterall, a middle class carpenter). Jesus didn't want us to be weak or mindless followers. Jesus wished for us to love each other and to live according to his teachings. We were not supposed to all drop our work and wander around aimlessly. Those who seek to dedicate their lives to studying Jesus and spreading His word, such as the apostles and modern day priests and Nuns, choose to cast off the cultural binds that tie. Most of us need to work and sustain ourselves in addition to worship. Jesus understands this.

You presume too much. While I suggested that most folks here were probably liberals, I never suggested that I was. To the contrary, I'm neither liberal nor sensitive nor very tolerant for that matter. Hence my belief that my first post was funny. If I offended you, I suspect you'll get over it. Can't please them all.

I wish the Catholic church would crusade against Islam as seriously and diligently as they backed the Inquisition.

Islam is the greatest threat to freedom and tolerance, especially religious that has ever existed.

There are only two kinds of Muslims. Radicals who want to kill all non-Muslims and moderates who support the radicals with their money and quiet support.

We should never forget, the aim of Islam is a completely Islamic world.
