studio monitors for music listening

hi there. so i'm looking for a decent pair of active studio monitors that are going to be used solely for music listening on the computer.

i've read several reviews about these kind of speakers and i just can't decide at all:

-how's the bass response on those speakers? i'm used to those cheap 2.1 systems with a "subwoofer". i don't want a subwoofer but also i fear that studio monitors won't have enough bass "punch".

-what brands would you recommend me? i was thinking on M-Audio, Event and Behringer. the M-Audio DX4's are probably the ones i would choose right now.

thanks for your help.

I use NHT M-00s that way and they sound great. I also have an S-00 subwoofer, but I ran the M-00s without it for almost four years and never missed it. The M-00s are punchy and detailed. I've heard other computer set-ups I liked, but I keep returning to the M-00s. They're a little pricey, but once you buy 'em, you're done. Even if you're an equipment junkie like me.

well. as what i saw they cost like ~$240 per speaker.. it's a little more money than i wanted to spend.

which speakers would you choose (per pair) below $300?

i saw good comments for Event speakers but they seem oriented more for studio recording/mixing than for music listening.. don't know about Behringer's either.

so i don't know if M-Audio's would be the best choice.

looks like those NHT M-00's don't include any cables or volume control?

also i forgot to say that the best sound card i can use on this computer can be an audigy4, (which works on UNIX-like systems).. so don't know if i should spend that much on the speakers.
