Are there "plans" to bring more of Stereophile print mag's "legacy" content online?

Short answer, yes.

I know some of it already has been, but a lot of it -- perhaps most of it -- is still offline (e.g., music reviews). Is it a matter of "we'll get to it" (the stuff already online has been cherry-picked)? Or is it that Stereophile does not want to give too much away as freebies -- i.e., there's still "gold in them thar hills" (i.e., a market for back-issue sales)?

The on-line archive is my personal responsibility, and I post 4-5 articles and reviews every week. Half of that activity each month concerns the current issue's content - other than Sam's Space, Analog Corner, Record Reviews, music features, and Recommended Components, and Letters, for which you do need to purchase the print magazine to read. That's not because the on-line content cannibalizes back-issue sales, but because the print magazine's income pays for the website and we need to maintain that source of revenue.

The other half of my archive activities each month concerns past content, and there is already an astonishing amount of material available: almost every As We See It essay going back to 1984; every Recording of the Month review going back to December 1990; every Listening, Fine Tunes, 5th Element, and Music in the Round column (other than columns dedicated to Show reports); almost every audio interview and technical feature going back to 1987; every Records to Die For feature; and almost every full equipment review (complete with follow-ups) going back to 1997 as well as a high proportion of the reviews going back to 1986 and a smattering of those published before 1986.

I give the highest priority to posting past equipment reviews because that is what readers have indicated they want. Music features and record reviews must currently take a lower priority, I am afraid.

As a long-time subscriber, I would be willing to pay for member's-only service to have the convenience of online access.

Appreciate the sentiment, but we don't currently see that payment for archive content would generate enough revenue to pay for another member of staff to do that work. That may well change, of course.

"Content is king" as the search-engine- and Internet-based marketers say. PPC (pay-per-click) ads or other affiliate-tracking ads, like the type Stereophile currently uses, also generate income. The NYTimes, and other print media, tried going to a paid-subscriber service, and that failed badly. I've heard that their current "free" site -- with lotsa ads -- has been a huge success.

I can appreciate your reasons for both print and online. I hope that Stereophile stays print and online forever - would also be interesting in paying for a separate new magazine available online only (sort of like Playback from the Absolute Sound). Just sayin - more content the happier we are

I love the blogs and actually have a hard time keeping up with them but, maybe some of that effort can reap financial rewards with a new venture to expand on the current Stereophile empire. I think your forums are great as well - more interaction = sign of the times.

Regardless, I am very tech savy but, print (and books in general) remain my favorite/ preference. Keep up the great work and thank you!

nunh,
I was going to add my 2 cents to what you said, but I can't think of anything. I'll just say that I second that!!
