These stands can be filled with sand or other filler if desired, are substantial, good aesthetics, and getting nto audiophile territory on a budget:
Sanus SF22.
For hiding cables, I use black cable ties at the very top and bottom of my stands. Running the wires behind the colum. Works very well.
They are about $100. Just google them for retailers,
Anything less will vibrate or not be steady.
As most OEM speaker stands are around $300, these are a relative bargain.

Get the Sanus Steel Foundations stands and fill the center pillar with steel or lead bird shot for mass and damping (get the shot from any sporting goods dealer).
Model numbers are SF22, SF30 and SF34 (the number is the height in inches).
DO NOT get cheap wood or plastic stands!!!
seems like the SF22s are the way to go!! I just don't like the iron metal look - would rather a more gloss finish but don't want to sacrifice quality!
