I think PSB had a speaker that made it into "Budget Component of the Year" award status. Do you read Stereophile? If so, check the Recommended Components edition. Otherwise, pull the review up from the archives.
You really don't give a clue what "better than my Mirage Omni 550 towers" would be, so it's difficult to do anything other than blanket recommendations. There are plenty of speakers which could be considered "better" than your Mirage Omni 550 towers. Small Magnepans are better in some ways. So are the a few dozen speakers sold on line that have lesser known names. If you could give us an idea what would be better in your opinion, we might be able to offer more useful suggestions.
Well based on the speakers that I heard from the more popular brands I guess these are the characteristics I am looking for:
more of a laid back neutral sound
good imaging without strict placement requirements
A lot of the speakers I heard overemphazised the highs a bit too much but I am wondering if it's mostly because they had metal dome tweeters.
I know there are a lot of speakers that are better than my Mirage in the price range but from the ones I heard none just seemed to stand out.
OK, scratch the small Magnepans.
They're not supposed to.
I Use the Silverline Minuet as surrounds in my Home theatre setup. The speakers are all Silverline. My fronts are the (since discontinued) Panatellas and I use their center speaker. I had used the Panatellas in my two channel system
(in which I currently use B&W 803-Ds).
I did not use the Minuets for much time for two channels (about 1 hour, in fact, just to confirm that I liked them and that they were a good match for the
Panatellas). They seem to share many of the virtues of their big brothers--great sound staging and a fabulous mid range. I think they would be great office speakers, where presumably your listening levels are lower than they would be at home.
In my office I use an old pair of B&W bookshelf and a small Polk Audio sub that I chanced upon, with my old SAE pre and power amp. People are always telling me how good it sounds and I've introduced a few people into the rudiments of audiophiia this way.
