So why piss off folks? Lower the price a few bucks per album and maybe they have a winner.
Last I checked Led Zep and Doors were goin for like 3 bucks on Ebay!
And they are $8.99 all day everyday at the used CD store!
Yeah, pricing is a bit high even for lossless.
However, since many pop/rock albums only have 2 or 3 worthwhile songs on them, this does give one the opportunity of buying just the good stuff instead of paying for entire albums.
However, I did just find one great bargain: the Ellington Reprise Studio Recordings, an OOP Mosaic set that goes for reasonably large money on ebay, is available for $60. AFAIK, no liners (which is disappointing) but that much Ellington goodness for that little money is a great deal.

What about Basie?
Yah gots your two types of music lovers. You gots your Ellington people, and you gots your Basie people.
I'm in the Basie camp. It is such an accurate divide that if you first ask a music lover if they like Basie, and if you like Basie, then you'll probably like their recommendations on just about anything else. But..if they like Ellington, then you may not like anything that they recommend.
Oddly enough, there is a decent amount of truth to this little point.
So, the first thing you do is ask a person (if you are going to compare musical tastes) if they like Ellington... or Basie. And you have your answer - from that one question.
Ellington is my hero, but Basie is my role model, especially as a writer. (He was, as many people have observed, an aphorist.)
So I have a foot in both camps.
On a different topic: over at Computer Audiophile, some of us are kicking around the quality of the FLAC downloads. I bought the Ellington set and a new MJQ collection Sunday, and the MJQ just doesn't sound right to me.
It's probably just me, but I am wondering how Rhino got to these FLAC files.

edit - I wanna emphasize that I hope this is nothing. The Rhino jazz catalog is fabulous, and I could happily spend money there for a long time to come.
RHINO = The Very Best Of John Coltrane FLAC $16.34

What is with these stupid prices for downloads.
No packaging, no warehousing, no transportation cost, no manufacturing cost equals higher price
And as for the crazy cost of HiRes downloads...don't get me started.
I'm all for downloading music but only when these thieves stop trying to rob us....again.
