Replacment Tubes for VP129

This is a really basic question, but I'm utterly ignorant when it comes to tubes.

I have come across a few old tektronix measuring equipment being disposed of. inside there were several tubes and tube types.

one of the more abundant tubes in my catch are 6DJ8/ECC88 amperex tubes.

I was wondering if i can stick these into my bellari vp129 they "fit" but will they "blow up" or "ruin" or "bring the pain" to my equipment?

the current tube in the bellari is an ecc83, I've heard reports of improvements when a "better" tube is used. Since i have these for free, I figure why not?

thanks for your help

PS I also have some other bigger fancier looking tubes, I don't need them, any guidance on how to go about testing/selling them?

I am far from a tube expert, but I don't think this is a wise idea as the tubes are from two different "families".

The ECC83 is a European version of the 12AX7.
The ECC88 is a European version of the 6992.

Similar in a number of ways, but not interchangeable.

I also find tubes tricky to understand.

Yeah, you really don't want to go swapping tubes with those of different specifications. Really bad things can happen to your gear. Just because it looks similar and will fit in the socket doesn't mean it won't blow electronics. 9 pin tubes, for example may have different pins hot. In a best case scenario you simply damage a tube.

This doesn't mean you can't swap around tubes with those of different specs, you just need to make sure that the amp design can handle the swap. Some can...some can't.

Audio Assylum would be a good place to start researching potential candidates for tube rolling.

By the way, real live old Amperex ECC88 tubes are very nice. A lot of preamps use 6992 tubes and would sound great with these if they have life left in them.
