Check out the Totem Arro, a little more than 1K, a floorstander with a footprint of a bookshelf, great for Jazz.
Here are some options worth a listen:
Paradigm Studio 40
Monitor Audio GS10
Epos M12.2
PSB Platinum M2
Totem Rainmaker
Focal Chorus 807V
Human 81+
Dynaudio audience series is also an alternative, most likely the Audience 42, find it on Audiogon. You can get a set for $500.
I've seen Vienna Acoustics Haydn speakers pop up on Audiogon around that range...
Check out the Paradigm Studio 20 v.4 speakers. After they break-in, they're excellent, accurate, and neutral. Great for stereo as well as home theater on the proper stands (24") they'll blow you away with their performance. They can go down to about 45Hz or so, so if you need deep bass for organ music, you need a subwoofer for them, too. A lot of stereo and home theater reviewers use these speakers in their reference systems, so that tells you about the quality of these speakers.
