Hey Fran.
Thanks for joining the forum. Try this audio glossary.
It should help. Have fun.

You can also place "audio glossary" in any search engine to get various perspectives on words.
Robert Harley's "The Complete Guide to High-End Audio" is a great start to understanding the terminology of high-end audio and getting someone up to speed.
Thank you, all, for your responses. Definitely worthwhile information which I'll be reading.
Over the weekend I visited a local audio dealer (all he sells is "audiophile" home sound equipment, no video). It was Saturday and he was rather busy so he told me to come back on Sunday when he could better demo the brands he carried. It was quite an education and I learned first hand what those terms I had asked about meant. He even had a copy of "The Complete Guide to High-End Audio" which he lent me to take home and read. (Certainly a worthwhile book...thanks mrlowry, I'll be purchasing a copy for myself). I've already heard several speakers that I enjoy so next, as the dealer suggested, I'll be going back to listen to the difference between SS and valves.
Thanks again for your advice for it's been a great help.
You are fortunate to have an audio dealer/ resource who took the time to help you out like that. Congratulations for taking the initiative to seek him out.
Fran-
It certainly sounds like you've found a very good dealer, which is probably the HARDEST part of the process. Glad to hear everything is going smooth. Don't hesitate to ask more questions.
So, Fran, What happened? Did you become comfortable with the audio jargon? Did you buy a new system? If so What?
I apologize for not having written an update...been spending my time enjoying the new system. I learned quite a bit from the book and my audio dealer, as well as reading what evryone posts here on the site.
The equipment I decided on is the Rotel RA/RCD 1520 and a pair of Renaissance MLP-403.5 (see John Marks review http://www.stereophile.com/thefifthelement/808fifth/ ). These speakers now have an upgraded crossover and sound much smoother between the bass and mids.
An entry level system, I guess, but very satisfying to my ears. Thank you, all, for your advice and input.
