A question of hygiene

Hello everybody,

I'm now a happy owner of a Rega Apollo.

Lately I could notice some dust deposited around the mechanism and around the lenses.

Despite my nickname, I try to keep the area around the gear as clean as possible!

I have no probs at the moment: the micro-fluff is very little, but it still makes me sort of uncomfortable.

I checked the manual and no maintenance is normally needed. If necessary Rega recommends to bring the CD player to an official dealer.

Is it normal that some deposit is formed? I don't think I'm living in a particularly dusty apartment (on the contrary).
Do I really have to periodically take it for cleaning???

Thank you for tips!

You can clean the tray area with a can of compressed air if it bothers you to know it's there. Keep the nozzle well away from the laser assembly and only clean what easily dislodges.

Hi Pigpen,
I have the same "problem" with my Electrocompaniet. Indeed no service is needed, just leave always a CD in the tray to protect the optics.

I bought a "cd lens cleaner" product - it's a CD with a tiny brush on it, you play the CD for 10 seconds and it cleans the CD player lens of any dust. I think it was made by Maxell. I suppose it works. I've used it every now and then and no harm done; and as far as I know the lens stays free of dust.

I also use the Maxell disc cleaner on my Apollo, and some compressed air to clear away debris. I think the laser pretty much goes right through that stuff, but you may as well keep it off if possible.
