Question about noise from my cartridge

Hi, I just bought my first turntable (Denon DP-300F) but I think there's something wrong with my cartridge (besides the fact that it's mediocre).

I'm using the Denon MM cartridge that came with the turntable, but I've noticed that whenever I play anything, I also hear a tinny version of the music echoing from the cartridge itself. I followed the instructions pretty well when balancing the tone arm and the tracking weight and everything...

I've never come across this before with other record players, so I was wondering if any of the more experienced audiophiles here knew what was causing it, and how I could get it to stop.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Question about noise from my cartridge

Do you mean that you can hear the cartridge itself play the music on the LP, even with all the other electronics off?

If so, every system I have ever had has done this. I have always thought it was pretty cool.

Does the system itself sound good or does something sound wrong?

Re: Question about noise from my cartridge

If you are very close to the TT you will hear the cartridge itself, but from anjormal lsitening distance of 6" or more it should be inaudible. Close the lid too? Hope that solves it!

Re: Question about noise from my cartridge

You know, if you attach a horn to the cartridge, you could bypass the rest of your system and "listen direct."

I know, you think I'm kidding, but I'm not.

"Direct Listening" is the future.

Re: Question about noise from my cartridge

Wow, thanks everyone for responding so quickly!

I was just standing in front of the turntable (with the music was playing in the background) when I noticed the echo. My system sounds fine, it's just that I had never noticed the direct playback from the cartridge before.

I had no idea the cartridge naturally made 'direct' sound. I thought something was wrong with it. I guess I just was never close enough to my dad's turntable back home to notice it.

Good to know. Thanks everybody!

Hi Mina,

Different type of stylus could be the cause.

Just a thought. Good luck.
