Hi Lee, welecome to the S'phile forums. As a fellow trumpeter I really enjoy your LPs. (I thought there was a dust-up over a jealous husband, but that obviously was false).

I haven't noticed Denon, but lots of people are restoring and upgrading old TT, like Gerrards, , Dual, Thorens, AR and Pioneer. Typical improvements include upgraded plinths and installing a modern tonearm.

Maybe someone will post a link here to a rebuilder. If not, I'll search around for you. That's a really good option that will move into much better resolution of your collection.

Of course, you could buy a "modern" table. I think you'll get the most bang for you buck with this approach, but I can understand if nostalgia has bitten.

While browsing at www.audiogon.com I ran a TT restoration and upgrade thread, which led me to the following link:
http://www.kabusa.com/frameset.htm?/

Kevin at KABUSA gets good reviews over at A'gon. One guy even posted that he called Kevin about upgrading his Technics and Kevin told him to stick with what he had, since it was superior. sounds to me like Kevin doesn't want to lead anyone down the wrong path.

Denon is mentioned quite a bit on Kevin's site, so you could probably call and talk to him about your unit. Things like the best mats, the best tonearms, upgrading the tonearm wiring and providing for interconnect upgrades, etc. are all things that it looks like he's likely to know.

Let us know what you do.

I'd really like to buy a new 'table (MMF5, Rega P3, SOTA, etc.), but I am disabled, so funds are tight. I've never heard of Audiogon before, only eBay. It appears there's many more serious turntables on Audiogon. Someday, I'll have the $$ and go buy something good, but for now, I am stuck listening to my old Denon, and loving it! Thanks for the Audiogon tip.

Audiogon is, from my and a couple of friends experiences, a great resource. Almost half my equipment has been bought and sold there. I doubt I'd have the great system I have if it weren't for buying used through Audiogon.

Lee, you might call that Kevin guy at KAB to discuss cost effective upgrades to your Denon. I bet he'll have a couple of ideas that won't set you back too much.

If it's a direct drive Audioquest's sorbogel mat might be in order.

However the best long term solution would be to save up and get a new 'table instead of buying lots of small tweaks. Eventually, the cost of these small tweaks will add up and be equal to what a new turntable would have cost you. But with not nearly that level of performance.
