Hey pal, I had a really similar setup and was able to run optical, rca digital, and analog at the same time. I would flip between them sometimes. The cables were all nothing special or expensive. I went back and forth between the rca digital out which used the denon dac and the analog out. As I recall, the digital was clear and crisp but the analog had a bit warmer mids.

So try some stuff with the other outputs and see what happens! Some folks at Stereophile are not big on optical cables. I have never bought good cables, so I am ignorant on that matter. I am sure others will chime in!

Optical isn't the optimal digital connection method but you may have problems that dwarf that issue.

What operating system is the computer running? XP, for example re-samples everything to 48khz from 44.1khz essentially by adding junk data in a portion of the OS called the k-mixer. The various Apple OS's, Vista, and Windows 7 are much better from a sound perspective.

Most Realtek "soundcards" are chips on the motherboard. In general the sound from them is not that good. You will get better sound with a USB DAC.
If you are using a desktop PC a good plug in soundcard will also sound much better.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I did try digital rca, but it was the same thing, its what led me to try fibre optic. I had a suspicion that my PC would be doing some funky processing/conversion that may have caused the problem, similar to when I tried connecting my ipod to my receiver. Anyway, I'm running Windows 7 64bit. The USB DAC is intriguing, I will look into it. Thanks again.

On a related note, I am using Audioengine's W2 wireless connector to play WAV files on my iPOD on my receiver based system in my living room. The quality of the sound is at least as good as the sound of a CD played on the DVD player in the same system. The best bit...the device is cheap, about $100....Perhaps they make something that goes direct from a PC to a receiver.
