Ornette Wins Pulitzer Prize!

One bright spot in what was a horrible news day yesterday: Ornette Coleman has won the Pulitzer Prize for music for his live album, "Sound Grammar." Having casually known the man since the sixties (I was his letter carrier in the West Village) I know how much this recognition means to him. And to all of us who care about his music, it's a wonderful thing.

The Pulitzer Board also recognized John Coltrane (40-years after his death and thus 40-years too late) with a special citation honoring his "masterful improvisation, supreme musicianship and iconic centrality to the history of jazz."

Two giants.

Re: Ornette Wins Pulitzer Prize!

Wonderful news and very well deserved in both cases. At least the Pulitzer Prize committee managed to give the award to Ornette while he is still alive. Now where are Cecil's, Miles' and Sonny's awards and prizes?? Hopefully Wynton didn't glom up all the prize money that earmarked is for jazz artists.

Ornette is a client (entertainment lawyers). We are incredibly proud.

I just wish I had something to do with it.
