I would make sure you have exhausted the possible set up parameters for its audio characteristics. You may have it set up wrong which can constrain its output.
In the Speaker Setup Page set the Down-mix mode as Stereo, Front Speaker to Large, Center Speaker to Off, Rear Speaker to Off, and Subwoofer to Off. In the Audio Setup Page set EQ Type to None, Sound Field to Off, and SPDIF output to PCM. If you have already done this then perhaps you are correct that your Denon out performs the Oppo.
Yeah, jackfish is right, you've probably got it set up for video surround rather than two-channel audio. Follow his suggestion and let us know if that doesn't fix it.
My Oppo 980 sounds very good.

I can't help thinking that it might be an issue of system synergy. If the Oppo is throwing out more detail than the receiver can handle, it might sound a bit "edgy".
Certainly, the settings should be checked, but sometimes gear just doesn't get along.
Could you please explain by what you mean by 'throwing out more detail than the receiver can handle'. That just seems like a statement that a newbie or semi-newbie such as myself will have a tough time digesting. I am not the original poster, but the post is relevant to some of my current HT/audio issues. Thanks
Thanks Jackfish for encouraging me to revisit the setup. Everything you mentioned was correct but the trim controls were all set to +10. I reset these to zero. I believe this made it sound like it should. It wasn't that the Denon sounded better before but that there was something wrong with the oppo. Now at least they sound comparable. I still want to give the edge to the Denon. Critical listening to follow....
Oops! I just noticed this post. Sorry for the delay.
What I meant was this: Receivers have a tendency to sound bright and unrefined. The Oppo is a very good player, and presents a lot of detail, which I imagine would sound very harsh and fatiguing through many receivers.
