Back in the 70's audiophiles used to buy LP's and transfer them to reel to reel because they felt that records wore out with each and every play. Vinyl was never considered audiophile grade until recently, where LPs became romanticized. Reel to reel was always considered the ultimate in analog reproduction.

Awww, you're making stuff up again. Yes, good open reel is superior but good open reel was rejected by the consumer decades ago due to cost, inconvenience and lack of support by the recording industry. 1/4 track tape at 7 1/2 i.p.s. is not much better than LP and can be worse. Every time an "audiophile" transferred their LP's to tape they introduced another 3dB of noise and substantial phase inaccuracies and could get not more information on the tape than their phono system could extract from the LP. I'm glad so many went to the trouble of making the transfore since I benefit by buying their virtually unused LP's but other than that most "audiophiles" bought reel to reels because they wanted to see the reels go 'round an'round like they saw on Hef's "Playboy's Penthouse" or because they were under the mistaken impression reel to reel offered longer playing times. You don't think LP's wore out? I suppose you're talking about those audiophiles who used "top o'the line" Garrard and Dual changers. Anybody remember the Garrard Zero Track?

If you can show some sort of proof to back up your claim LP's "became rominticized", I'd like to see it since it doesn't exist. As to your statement, "Reel to reel was always considered the ultimate in analog reproduction", well, ROTFL! I've got a collection of LP's that include "Direct to Disc" (the ultimate analog source) and dozens upon dozens of "Digitally Mastered" LP's from the late 1970's through '80's that say you are wrong once again. And you must have forgotten "Perfect Sound Forever". Alex, stop drinking dup's used KoolAid.

Reel-Reel wasn't REJECTED.....it was replaced by the Philips compact cassette in teh 60's. Lotsa folks had ree-reel in their home systems, lots!!! I even had an Akai cross field head unit, similar to teh Roberts branding of teh same thing. The cassette took off then even more when Advent got teh dolby stuff out there and it went further and further, till cassettes outsold LPs''''Cassette replaced 8 tracks also, convience and fildelity kept improving with Dolby and DBX noise reduction. Are you gonna claim CD has been REJECTED after it's 20+ year run as the format of choice, now that mP3 is the in thing for convience.....it's not rrejection, it's evolution....AM wasn't REJECTED, it was suplanted by FM, FM will be replaced by Sirius....it's called moving along..not stopping and getting moldy....you know like sticking to a single driver under powered high THD setup. Eventually one has to move, otherwise ya get stuck to teh toilet seat, and then they have to come and rescue ya from your shitty domain. Progress, move up and on, that's why new stuff is created...cus' it does improve....Maybe we need the wax cylinders back, cus they where REJECTED after the gramphone appeared.....Hmmm, both the flat round record and magnetic recording GERMAN inventions....they just keep making hi fidelity better and better.

So where are you on the evolutionary ladder, dup? And haven't you been paying attention to the demise of CD's in favor of other formats? Geez, dup, you really are living in your own little world of make believe aren't you? I bet you even think MP3's aren't good because they don't got no SLAM!!!!!!!

It's remarkable, dup, how when faced with no facts what so ever to fall back on your posts get less readable for knowledge and begin to sound more like product placement promotions. Philips, Akia, Roberts, Advent, Dolby, DBX? Is that meant to impress someone here? Your post has nothing to do with what I stated.

Someone call 911. dup has fallen though the outhouse toilet seat!!!

dup, which of your two 1/4 track reel to reel machines was state of the art? The Philips or the Akia?

Beta was REJECTED..DCC was REJECTED, mini disc was REJECTED,CD singles where REJECTE, HD-DVD was REJECTED as formats. CD is on it's patent expirations, which is why SACD came out kinda like after 17 years..hmmm. I'm sure they already have something coming out to evolve yet again. What is being REJECTED is the crap stuff trying to be sold as music nowadays......that's why sales keep droping at the record labels....it ain't the format, it's the content.

Right, dup! Not enough stuff with SLAM!!!!! You just keep listening, dup, one day it'll break through your skull.

Getting back to which one of your 1/4 track machines were even a far sight off of state of the art, how many of those old polyester or mylar tapes are still playable? Bleed through, oxide flaking off, edge deteriotation, brittle substrate not to mention they really weren't recorded that well or on a tape that was top notch. That's good analog?! Crimeny! I've got phonograph discs from the 1930's that are still playable and most of my Mercury's from the 1950's are as quiet as you should be, dup. I wouldn't dare run any of my old tapes through my Revox today. Revox - now there was near state of the art for consumer 1/4 track decks. Not Philips! Philips?! ROTFL!!! Cross field head Akia? Oh, my! You shoulda bought the Pioneer.

Records from the 30's!!!! Nothing like that high speed Mastering hahahahahahaha 78 RPM, don't forget to polish your Needle. I'm sure they sound just great, on a 5" single speaker, how many times do you have to crank your wind up RCA Victor talking machine?....that's like saying I have a YUGO, it still runs. So what. So now you have gone full circle, since magnetic tape does deteriorate over decades, that's why they are DIGITAIZING teh master tapes in many studios..so that it remains available. But then now they have "ruined" the magic analog when they digitized it? don't think so. What high end 78 mono cartridge are you using on them 1930's records? Surely you only have state of the art 78 records right? Pre 1950's home hi fi was pretty much non existent. So your "playable" 78's are pretty much good for target practice, puuuuuuuuuuuullllllll.

In his interview published in the November issue of Stereophile, Tim de Paravicini states "If you cut vinyl properly, it will sound virtually indistinguishable from the master tape." 'Nuff said.

IF..........that's a big IF. Then there's Tom Port at www.dccblowout.com Who says most records suck, and most "audiophile" records ain't.......so now it's back to null that argument. http://www.dccblowout.com/dept.asp?dept_id=14-006-013

But then Tom Port has Magic Pillows, so his ideas could be all nulled by nonsense...null the null and the previous null http://www.dccblowout.com/product.asp?pf...Fid%3Dnevermind

Some bait is juicy and still has real meat to chew on, even it it will get you in a little Tug 'o War.

Other bait, like this thread's title, is like a 3 week old fish that's been sitting on a warm rock- it smells and falls apart with the first tug, and will make you feel nauseous if you keep at it.

Why Jan, do you ALWAYS go for the bait?!?

'Cause sometimes kicking it down the block is fun. Messy but fun. I notice you've got some fish slime on your shoes too.

Jan, list some pre 50's home hi fi stuff. McIntosh was just starting up, most stuff was morphing from theatre use. Large horns etc, cus the amps had no power. Dyan didn't get moving till the 50's, which really started things moving. The pro companies had stuff, not meant for home use. It all seemed to evolve from theatre stuff, and they had to shrink in down to fit in consumer homes. Which is what Acoustic Research figured out real well. That was anotehr major step for home hi fi
