"What if I could only buy one record in 2010? If I had to have my musical cravings sustained by just one album, what would it be?"

That's like asking "Which liter of air would I like to breathe?"

If I could only buy one record, could I still listen to the ones I already own?

If I could only buy one, it might be The Flaming Lips version of DSOM.

If I could only listen to one album, today I would pick Quadraphenia.

Yes.

Interesting choices, Bood.

By coincidence I was thinking the same thing the other day while watching the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Concert on HBO. I gave Mrs. Sanford the mono vinyl set one Christmas not too long ago. The Beatles really were pretty good, huh? If you don't have the DVD, "Let it Be", you should get it. I love the conversations they have with each other. Particularly, between Paul and John about the impossibility of ever being able to play live again. That they would have to split up to get back to doing what they love doing the most. The film culminates with the famous rooftop concert. I love listening to them on that rooftop. They really were pretty good.

I think it's harder to pick out one record these days because of the 'spread of excellence' Gould talks about in Full House.

That said, if it were down to one record, I'd buy Dylan's 'Tell Tale Signs' on vinyl, to compliment the single, double and triple cd sets I already own.

As well-praised as TTS was on release, I think it's still undervalued - this accidental album is my hands down pick for album of the decade.

The Beatles mono set is kinda cheating, since there's SO MUCH good stuff there! Their earlier stuff (i.e. I Saw Her Standing There) has such a raw, exuberant, confident swagger combined with their sweet, melodic harmonies. They kick your ass with a soft boot and a sense of humor. Penny Lane is the perfect song. Every album broke new ground without feeling forced or contrived. They made teen age angst/high school years a cosmic, yet visceral adventure into a new world.

But ONE disc only? I have a hard time picking ONE Pixies record, but I'd go with Surfer Rosa.

Bude- Let the love reign o'er you!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Well, if we are allowed to choose box sets here... Either Velvet Underground's 'Peel Slowly' or more recent Tom Waits 'Bawlers, Brawlers and Bastards'. Or what about Neil Young first set of archives.. though I really would want his 2nd era that will inevitably come (soon?) Or the Dylan as well. But even on the bootlegs series and this... which volume to buy?!? Man, just too many choices. Seriously.
