Now on Newsstands: Stereophile Vol.37 No.6

Our June 2014 issue is now on newsstands, with MBL's cool-running, hot-sounding Corona C15 amplifier on its cover. The C15 combines a class-D output stage with a hefty linear power supply to produce performance that finally convinced John Atkinson that class-D designs need not produce compromised sound quality. JA also outs his hearing ability on the line by reviewing EnigmAcoustics' cost-no-object electrostatic supertweeter. The bulk of the Sopranino's output lies above the venerable JA's hearing limit, so did he hear any improvement? Read the review to find out.

Michael Fremer concludes his two-part review of VPI's Classic Direct Drive turntable with its 3D-printed 12" tonearm—a combination costing $30,000 that he declared a "bargain" in the May issue. Bob Reina takes time off from reviews of affordable loudspeakers to enhance the sound of his big rig with Audio Research's full-function SP20 preamplifier, while Art Dudley and Brian Damkroger investigate the sweet spot in digital component pricing with reviews of an Italian Lector DAC and a Danish Primare CD player.

English speakers get a once-over, with John Marks enthusing over a minimonitor from pro-audio manufacturer ATC and Stephen Mejias in his final equipment report deciding to settle down with KEF's LS50. And in his final "Entry Level" column before he leaves Stereophile to join AudioQuest, Stephen auditions affordable gear from Music Hall. You can find JA's tribute to Stephen in both the "Letters" column and "Industry Update," the latter recently posted to this website..

Our June issue kicks off with a question from reader Glenn Weadock: "Why Music?" Read the magazine to find out!

If, as you say, it is only now that John Atkinson is "finally convinced . . . that class-D designs need not produce compromised sound quality," then I'd like to ask why the Power Plant T+A class D integrated amplifier was given a Class A rating by Stereophile so long ago. Its sound quality was seriously compromised in the mids and highs, and it is because of that ill-considered review that I no longer subscribe and rarely pay attention to Stereophile any more.

Cheers, a long-time listener

Hi

I haven't received my digital version via Zinio yet - having checked with them they haven't received it from you. It's unusual for it to come out a week after the paper version, will it be available soon or are you battling with a gremlin or two? Thanks in anticipation of another good edition

The Apple Newsstand edition is available for download. I signed off on the Zinio edition a week ago with the understanding that it would become available Friday May 16. I will find out when it will become available.

My apologies for the delay.

Zinio let me know that this issue was set to go live last Thursday but it seems that there was a problem. It's been fixed and the June issue will be available for download around noon EST.

I am also still waiting for my Zinio edition. This is getting to be a recurring problem.

Whilst I'm at it.......I know you've been out there a long time but would any self-respecting Brit have a photo of himself drinking something that isn't beer out of a pint glass, and worse still through a straw? Or have you gone truly native?!!

According to the TOC, it should be on p.89. It's not there, though. Editorial mistake?

No mistake. It's there as a section in the Lector review, when Art used the Halide as a reference for comparison.
