Newbie With Budget, Please Help

Hello,

I recently tried to hook up my old Sansui receiver to no avail, it needs at least 150 dollars of work.

I know that I want to purchase the Vandersteen 2ce's and the Marantz 6400 CD player. But first I need a good pre amp and amp.

My budget is $2000. I'm fine with used equipment. My problem is I don't know too much about what I could get with my money and what I need.

My budget is very tight.

Could someone please steer me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Jason

Would a used McIntosh MA6300 be a good option?

Emotiva USP-1 and a pair of UPA-1s or an XPA-2

AMPLIFIER

For that money, the only really good-sounding separates I know of are the Vincent SP-331 amplifier ($1300)  and SA-31 preamp ($649). They are excellent-sounding units (product of the year at The Absolute Sound) and perform well above their price. You could easily spend $5000 to equal them. Audio Advisor sells them.

I don't know of another preamp that comes close until you get up to $2000 or more. Most preamps for less than $1500 do not sound all that good..

The other possibility would be the Musical Fidelity M3i integrated amplifier for $1500. I have that at my second home and it is very good for the money; a gem. I have tried it with both my Vandersteens and the PSB image T6 speakers at my second home, and it sounds great with both. You can't go wrong with it. It has way more power than either of those speakers need (100W + at 4 ohms).

I have had the Vandersteen 3A speakers for years and love them; the 2ce is also a great speaker. Put them with either of the above amplifiers and you will have some sound you will love.

"maybe"

Price seems OK but I'd want to personally check it out. All depends on your aversion to risk. Mac is typically top notch build quality, though.

Edit: my response is to the question about the MA6300 but it didn't appear beneath it.
