I currently have a Cerwin Vega cmx12s 12" subwoofer 32-150hz 300 watt, ported.
I want to upgrade but I'm not sure what to upgrade to.
A sealed or ported ?.12", 13.5", or 15".
One sub or two ?
I use it more for music than movies.
I've heard some non ported and they were more accurate and tighter bass but didn't sound quite right on deeper bass notes.
But I'm worried a ported 15 might be too boomy and muddy rather than tight.
Opinions ?
I'm looking at hsu and svs, maybe paradigm or jl.
Just looking at the specs wouldn't the hsu or svs be louder at lower frequencies ? (I didn't just compare one against the other, I was looking at a few of each brand.)
You said more music than movies, and I responded with the best solution for that. If you need more of a good thing, then get more. I can't imagine needing more than two Rythmik F12s in all but the largest rooms. Employing two subs has a tendency to even out peaks and nulls in a room. What is your room like? Size, features, furnishings?
The specs are 90% bullshit!
All ported subwoofers have undamped resonances that are a problem.
The best I have ever heard for tight clean sound, low distortion, and linear response is the NHT B12D subwoofer, which is a sealed acoustic-suspension design with tons of power.
I use one; it's a bargain at only $700.
Another advantage of this design is relatively small size; a 14-inch cube.
My system is basically a music system, altheough I use it for TV sound also.
I have Gallo CL-3 speakers, the sub, and a Audio Research LS-26 preamp with a Bryston 3B-SST2 power amplifier. Good stuff.
I've heard that servo subs are weird, that you can't really hear the bass, but you can feel it ? I don't know if that's true or not, but it's something that concerned me.

Thanks for the links, very informative. I forgot you asked about the room it's a 12X12 but beside the doorway is where the closet is and the closet isn't really in the wall it comes out of the wall about 3 feet and is about 6 and a half feet long. It has 8 foot ceilings.
I have an Outlaw sub and have been very pleased with it. I also have heard good things about Hsu. And then there is Emotiva. I do not have one of their subs, but I have a boatload of their speakers and am very impressed with their price/performance ratio. Also, they have a sealed sub which has advantages.

of subwoofers or even a single 15" might be overkill. What are your loudspeakers and other associated gear?
I am soon moving my gear into a larger room. I was looking at bigger subs because I wasn't sure how much of an improvement a little better of a sub that's the same size would be versus a little better and a little bigger of a sub. I mostly listen to heavy metal, some rock and rap/hip hop. My gear right now Is a harman kardon avr 147 receiver, a pair of paradigm titans, a pair of paradigm mini monitors, a paradigm cc-350 center channel, cerwin vega cmx12s sub. I'm replacing my receiver with a better amp. My friend gave me a pair of nuance towers but I haven't hooked them up yet, they probably don't sound as good as my paradigms.
