Sell the Celius. You can improve the wonderful midrange with a tube amp but the dissapointment of everything else will remain. Sorry to be so blunt but hindsight is 20/20.

The Arcams are the Delta 290 and the Delta 290P. Quite old but never a hint of a problem.
So you really dislike Triangle then eh? They are always all over the Recommended Components list and there definitely is something special about them to be sure. Too refined ya think?
And yea, I'm going to keep the Arcams, just move them to to a less used bedroom system.
RGibran, he wasn't complaining about his speakers and says the Triangles are "amazing." Perhaps you'd care to elaborate why you think he made such a grievous error? How does he know what your biases and priorities might be?
@LinkwitzRiley:
Tube or transistor amps can both be made to at least somewhat emulate each other's attributes. I'd caution against romantic notions of what's "supposed" to work well in a given situation. There's no recipe for good hifi. If what you've read about the LFD and Triangles suggests a good match, audition them together if you can. But don't freak out if it doesn't work for you. Also don't freak out if a transistor amp winds up sounding better for you and the Triangles.
I strongly suspect you've taken parts of Tellig's writing as a recipe to follow. Use it as a starting point, same as for reading from any author. See the difference?
"Do I get something like a Conrad Johnson preamp and hope someday to be able to afford a nice amp to go with it ..." ---unless that day would come soon, you know the answer to that question.
"and since they are solid state I don't expect them to last forever." --- everything wears out, especially tubes. Capacitors' and resistors' values shift, heat ages parts, things get noisy, power supplies weaken.
Thank you deckeda, actually that is what I have scheduled for the weekend. I'm going to take an LFD home to try it as the owner of my local (what's it called, stereo, hi-fi?) shop suggested. The thing is I've watched more than a few tube preamps that I'd love to own come and go in the meantime.
I guess my question should have been something like this..... If you only had 3500 to spend on powering a pair of Triangle Celius ES's, what woulld you buy?
Cayin Audio A-100T integrated tube amplifier you might find an eardrippin' good combo there. The Marantz 7C was one sweet preamp and the Marantz 9 mono power amplifiers are rare and legendary. The design goals for the Cayin A-100T were to imitate the sound of that historic combo.
Cayin A-70T ?
What would be a fair price for such an animal? I see one, but it does not have phono (my drug of choice) or pre out etc. So how much ya think new?
for $3295 delivered. The Transcendent Sound Phono Preamp kit is $700, assembled $1000. That phono preamp paired with a Cayin A-70T would be $3200. Don't know if the synergy is there between them though.
