Oppo for a 2 channel digital source with a 10K budget? The New Sony SACD player would be at the top of my list. For a TT, check out a VPI Super Scoutmaster (comes with arm) and a Sumiko Blackbird cartridge. Take a look at MSB for a DAC. All the amps and preamps I would buy are only available used.

I was thinking of the Oppo since it was given an A+ rating in Vol32 #10. (I was thinking of getting the Meridian DAC that has HDMI inputs.)

Since I'm not getting much action on this thread, can anyone just point me to that article I was talking about previously? It may have been a listening article, but it gave price ranges 5k, 10k, 15k, etc and listed a full system that you could get for that price.

Thanks!

Kind of difficult to recommend, if we don't know what your speakers are. i.e., if your speakers are reasonably sensitive w/ easy load, then we can recommend tube amps, for example...

but as for sources:

Well Tempered Amadeus TT should get a consideration ($2850). Heard one recently and it sounds unbelievable for the price.

For the phono stage, I'd love to try the Leben RS30EQ (~$3K?)

For integrated amp, the old Jeff Rowland Concentra I (the 100 wpc version, NOT the later II with 150 wpc); how much do these go for used, like $2000?

For digital, just get soemthing like Logitech Transporter or Linn Sneaky or hook up your laptop to an async USB dac like Ayre QB9 & go hi-rez.

I don't recall Stereophile doing such an article.

Are you sure you not confusing it with The Absolute Sound. I believe I recall hearing they did a recommended systems article once.

Oppo > Meridian DAC works.

The new Sony SCD-XA5400ES is $1500. IT is SOOOOO good that it blows away every CD or SACD player under $10,000! When I heard it side-by-side with my $6000 Ayre C5-xe, my jaw hit the floor; it just blew the Ayre away (and the Ayre has been John Atkinson's REFERENCE for a few years now...). It is scary good, and would be a steal at $5000. Don't think of building ANY system for $5000, $15,000, or $30,000 without this one! Use the Audioquest Diamondback interconnect( about $200) for good results; cheap interconnects would be a mistake here.
It is AWESOME!

As for the rest of a $10,000 system, I would use Vandersteen Model 2CE speakers ($2200), the Audio Research SP17L preamp ( $2300), and the Bryston 2B-SST-2 power amplifier ($2700).

That comes to $8,900, and is as good as it gets for that price; the sound will be spectacular. The SP17 and the Sony player are HUGE values for their price. Five years ago you would have had to spend much more for comparable components (as I DID), and this would have been, at that time, a $15,000 system for the same sound!

That does not include a turntable or phono stage.

You can get a number of good turntables for $400 to $1000; the Music Hall 5.1 at $600 would be a good choice. See the online Music Direct catalog for good information. Don't get the lousy Goldring cartridges that Music Hall supplies, though. I really like the Benz Micro Silver MC for $350.

For a phono preamp stage, I suggest the Parasound Z-phono at $200. You will possibly want a better one at a later time, but they get very expensive in a hurry, and this one is a steal for the price; a good one for a start.

The total should come in at under $10,000, depending on how much you decide to spend on turntable and cartridge.

On the other hand you could just duplicate my system (shown below), which has been painstakingly built up over the last 30 years by thousand of hours of careful listening to hundreds of components. It will cost you more like $25,000, however.

P.S.- The current issue of The Absolute Sound features system recommendations at various price points from $5000 on up to $30,000+. The components I just recommended above are also included in some of their recommendations; great minds...lol.

Perhaps the guy asking the question should define how much he would like to spend on each of those components? With that info, one can better make recommendations...one can afford a lot of very good gear within $10K but only buy one or two bits.

If the speakers allow Tubes, the PrimaLuna Dialog series is VERY good. The $1-1500 Benchmark DAC series is also very nice for the money. I am confused why one would want a blueray source for a 2 channel system without video??

I agree with the Zphono recommendation...it sounds better than any sub $1K turntable/cartridge and is enough for more expensive source choices. I am using it with a Thorens 170/Ortopon Red with it and feel upgrading the cartridge would not stress the amp.

As long as his prices are right I REALLY like commsysman's answer. All great products.
